Turbo Duo will not power on
« on: November 16, 2016, 04:45:15 PM »
1st post. Shame that it has be one like this even though I've been a member of the forums for a bit.

Recently I got a copy of Rockman for my Turbo Duo and went to play it, only to find to my dismay that my Turbo Duo will not power on at all. I don't have a Security bit, so I haven't been able to open the unit yet to see if any caps are leaking or something has occurred to the board. All I know is that last I tested this system, it was working fine on my new 30 inch HDTV in a test of the composite signal through component inputs, and that Rondo of Blood played fine. I disconnected the system. There was no sign of any issues during gameplay, nothing at all.

Fast forward to 2 nights ago. The Turbo Duo won't power on, at all. I reconnected it back up and was looking forward to playing Rockman when boom, no power, no nothing. Tried multiple outlets.

Took the Multi-meter I have and the Power supply is registering 14 v DC, so I don't think the power supply is a problem either as my genesis bricks register the same voltage.

At this point, I'm thinking it's either the fuse, or possibly the power adapter in the back of the unit...or...worse case scenario, bad caps.

I'm waiting on a security bit I ordered to crack open the console and take a look as I do not have one on hand currently. That all having been said, if I find that bad caps have caused this, does anyone on this board know of a solid, 100000000000% reliable repair service that can service this unit and get it back up and running?

My Turbo Duo's shell is in near pristine condition, and admittedly as easy as the plastic scratches, I'm extremely nervous about sending it out to anyone for repair, due to so many shady repair and modding services being out there. Last thing I want is to get back a Turbo Duo that looks like it's went through Armageddon. Or even worse, a different one than I had sent in for repair.

I know I eventually need to get the caps replaced on this thing anyways. So, any and all feedback would be immensely appreciated. I'm hoping this is just a blown fuse for some inane reason, and that I can swap out the fuse to find out.

Preferably, anyone who has a storefront and an online presence with a good, solid and reliable reputation with their customer base would be preferred for this.

I'm also open to feedback on what I can do to look into for repairs on this myself. Admittedly though, I have zero soldering experience and am most assuredly not an electrical engineer.

Thanks in advance.

This may sound silly but 85% of the time when someone contacts me saying their system will not power on it turns out to be a bad AV cable.

To find out if your system is indeed getting power simply press the run button on your controller with no game inserted to see if the CD loading light turns on.

There is no power LED on a Turbo duo. Only a CD loading light.

I was going to say.. I thought my Turbo Duo was not powering up.. started semi-panicking, etc.

Then on an off chance my hand jiggled the AV cable, and a picture flickered on the screen. Turns out that's all it was.. a little jiggle on the AV cable and a picture showed up (albeit unstable). I'll have to get a new one but was thankful that's all it was.

Thanks Keith, I appreciate the assist.

Turns out your words triggered an idea in me that it may not be the AV cable at all, but actually the Audio Video ports on the back of the Sony Trinitron I have. I moved the system over to the HD TV and hooked it up and boom, got a video signal.

I feel a bit silly, but also relieved it's such a simple problem. So, I appreciate the advice. You definitely helped me figure out what was going on.

Thank you once again. I really appreciate it.
