Modding my Hori Fighting Commander PC
« on: December 12, 2016, 09:53:47 AM »
Someone donated some money to my pcedev site, so I found this a good time to pick up a 6 button controller for PCE. Of all these years, I've never owned one..

It looks awesome, but one thing would have topped it off - a switch to map run or select to button 3. So I'm planning on modding one of the other turbo switches to function as this; toggles run, select, or off (regular button 3). Of course, the devil will be in the details (need to see how this would work when the control is in 2B mode).

Anyone tried anything like this before for the Hori fighting pad? Anyone interested in doing this to theirs if I get it to work?

Don't know. Still in the mail. I also bought an Ave 6 pad at the same time (also still in the mail). The Hori fighting commander was only $10 more (hori was $45 and Ave was $35). The hori has extra turbo switches that I would probably never use. That's why I'm going to try and repurpose one of them.

The Hori feels just like a genuine SNES gamepad. The only thing that gets me puzzled regularly are the missing shoulder buttons.

They tried to make me do a recap
I said no, no, no

Duo_r did a 3 button switch mod to a Ave 6 pad not too long ago.  Seems like a great mod and I've been wanting to do it when I have time.  I would also be interested in doing a mod to the Hori fighting commander.

Also if you could utilize one of the extra 6B positions for switching modes/buttons or something, that would be quite nice and clean.

I agree, it feels just like a SNES pad which is why I kind of prefer the Ave 6 pad even though I think the Hori dpad is better.  Sometimes, out of habit, I press the blank shoulder area of the Hori when I play Street Fighter II.

I kinda wish the Hori pad also had shoulder buttons (redundant of two buttons of new set). I added 6 button support for Megaman 1 on PCE, but I haven't assigned any to them yet. I feel that weapon changing (cycling) would be nicer if it was done through shoulder buttons. Or if hacked, or an engine made from the ground up, added Megaman X features such as dash and slide - shoulder buttons would be great for that. But.. I guess we can't have it all.

I should be getting my Hori pad today, but I did already received my Ave 6. I'm impressed with the Ave 6 pad. I've read some negative things about it on the net, but hell.. everything feels great about the controller. I couldn't be more happier with it.

As far as modding it, I could do something with the slowmo switch.. 'cause I'd never use it. But.. not having three positions means I can't set either start or select to button 3, where as with the Hori I can. I don't particularly want to physically alter the gamepad to install another switch - but I guess that's still an option for the Ave 6.

Update: I got Hori gamepad today. Pretty nice. Different than the Ave 6, but I like both.

Anyway, so I realized the pad has three settings for slow mo: off, mid, and high. I retapped those connectors and routed them to: start, select, and button three. The switch maps start, select, or normal button 3... into button 3. This means if you put "select" in there, you can set button 3 rapid fire and get rapid select (this is funny to do in Air Zonk!). Same for start -> rapid start or "slow mo". So I didn't actually lose slow-mo; it's now just a button to be pressed held. The mod works regardless of which mode the gamepad is in; 2 or 6 button mode.

I've never had a 3 button pad before with Turbo and PCE games. Holy crap does Bloody Wolf play differently. Great for Soldier Blade: switching between high/low speed for the ship is so much easier. Of course, I tried Forgotten Worlds out with it. The SNES design with 3button support feels pretty comfortable with that game in Ave 3 mode. Though I kinda wish the pod would rotate a bit faster.

All in all, love the gamepad and love this mod.

Le Loup Sanglant

The flamethrower...I use it in short bursts and it last FOREVER...but that's when I am being overly frugal. There is nothing more satisfying than wantonly whipping flamethrower around.

What's funny is that I am so used to using the select button in Bloody Wolf...when I was a kid...that my muscle memory *FIGHTS* me using III button. No joke.

So, I think I prefer Select button, only because I spent years training my fingers...the same with lots of shootemups (for adjusting speed).

That said, I have spent the last decade trying to *unlearn* the muscle memory and use III button...that was the motivation behind the old FAQ (ha!).

Even in Neutopia 2, I found using button 3 for menu screen to be more smooth/natural during gameplay. I mean, when you're constantly switching between items so it makes process nice/smoother.

Yup—any game that requires constant use would benefit.
