So I watched the part about the father with spliced parts of his mother being interviewed "and having a very different perspective of the relationship between father and son and her role".
Before I forget. They end the segment about his childhood and fathers death with a fade out to a NES game quote "what a horrible night to have a curse" from Castlevania II. Could that have been more poorly executed? Completely tasteless.
People here defend the person who made the documentary sighting that the next one might be better.
Firstly the tone presentation and editing of this documentary is under direct contril of the director. So that right there tells me his work is piss poor and future works would be a wast of my time.
Secondly the subject of this documentary is a personal friend fk the director/documentary filmed for 30 plus years as self reported during some of his narritive segments.
Now to the account of the death and relationship he had with his father.
-his father was described as: a tyrant, not understanding or being interedted in the things he was personally interested in (despite admiral that the father tried to understand and be a part of it). That he felt relief after his death "as though a weight was lifted from my shoulders (ohh shit I better spin this quick) our shoulders my mother and I."
Comments like this leads one to believe that it wasn't purely lack of father son bonding between the sons interest. This sounds more indicative of abuse phsyical, emotional, sexual. So there seems to be more to the story. If not then the guy has some serious personality disorder as his reaction and interpretation is skewed.
This leads the viewer to draw the conclusion that the guy questing for video games as
Entitled
Unsympathetic (despite attempt to humanize and draw sympathy from the viewers with this story)
Horrid social relationships
Among other negative views.
Which brings me back to this being a reflection of the director/documentary and editor.
The narritive flow was off, little to no framing of the movie, and lack of focaul point. The media graphics used throughout were amateurish. I have seen YouTube channels with better editing and graphic design then this. Such as game sack, classic game room, and such.
