« on: April 15, 2017, 08:34:47 PM »
I started playing Dungeon Explorer and found it to be pretty awesome. I know it's a favorite around here but was hoping to get some advice. I die...alot. Any tips? Also, is it worth it to play both?

It's a great game.

Don't worry if you die...you probably haven't had a chance to improve the stats of your player too much...with every boss you beat, you will be able to make yourself stronger/faster/etc.

This game is like Gauntlet in that (1) sometimes you want to clear out an area, as long as you don't lose much life, (2) but other times, there is no shame in just running past an enemy and diving for the exit.

I always want to kill everything, compulsively, but that isn't always the best strategy unless you have enough offensive power/in a party with others.

WHITE POTIONS.

Drastic Measure: You could consider changing your character if you really are frustrated. I have beaten the game with every character, but it's the very *beginning* where their differences are most drastic...when you level up, you can decide if you want to "fill deficits" or "accentuate your strengths"...but, considering how many nooks and crannies are in tight corridors, "superspeed" might not be as useful as increased offensive attack or strength :)

Although, being able to run laps around a boss is fun.

Remember your mantra:
EAT. PLAY. DIE. PLAY. DIE. PLAY. LOVE TG-16.

Both are great games.

The second one is bigger and has more to explore. Also, more hidden characters than the first game and even better colors.

Experiment with the different characters and see what one or ones you like the best. Then upgrade them to your play style.

Make sure to test the black and white potions on each character as they do different things.

Both are fantastic in their own right, that said I gotta give the nod to part deux.

That intro, the presentation Cd sound and just more of everything that made the first so great.

Can't go wrong with either though .

Dexplorer 2 is awesome and has a larger map but the first one has a charm on its own... plus II is crazy expensive unless you CDR it or play it Tobias style so that kinda counts against the CD sequel.

I personally prefer Dungeon Explorer 2 but that's just because I don't have the first one...

Still pretty cheap for a very playable Japanese retail disc.

Anyway, both games are great. Definitely play both OP.

No reason not to play both. The graphics are dark and lack detail but the music is incredible

I've only played the inferior dungeon explorer 2 port on the snes rather than the original, but it's a good game

All these elitist bastards talking about DE2!

DE Huey is a great game that is every bit as fun and satisfying as its successor!

DE has some of the best PSG tunes...and the gameplay/mechanics in the two games are identical.

So, finish the Huey first.

It's awesome!

Plus, you need to defeat Natas in the Huey before you earned the privilege of playing the sequel.

NO SPOILERS, people.

:)

Holy Cannoli!

You owe it to yourself to play DEII CD :)

No, the irony of this comment following the previous one is not lost on me.

You know, sadly, I still haven't sat down to beat Dungeon Explorer II, and Bernie gave me a Tobias repro too... What is wrong with me... *sniff* :(

When/if I do, I'm gonna start with the Huey again, since that was rented and beaten when I was a kid, so I don't remember much.

The correct answer is nowhere on this poll, and that is: Both games - back to back

Agreed.  Ya gotta play both!

As for tips, try to find a player that fits your play style.  I prefer to take it slow and kill everything, using heal magic as needed.

I like the original better than the sequel. In the original, even when your stats are low you still control really well, whether you move quickly or slowly on-screen. In the sequel, if your agility is low you feel very sluggish and unresponsive, not just slower on-screen movement. I found it very hard to get into the game because of this. It takes a while for the character control to get up to the level immediately available in the original HuCard title. That alone made the original a much better play experience for me.

You can change the crystals you picked up in DE2 however, so you can up your agility stats.  I played thru the game with most characters, adjusting where need be.  I don't recall being able to do that in the first game, but, then again, I only beat it via DEBDE DEBDA.......
