I loved that stuff because it was spastic.

Sonic is basically what hyper kids played because Mario and shit was too slow.

I'm one of those people that plays mario with the run button held in the whole time.

Sonic is just like that by default, lol.
Then why does he take forever to accelerate to top speed? Except for when you do that spin-dash bulls*** which pretty much makes the game play itself for you...

because the game would be unplayable if pressing right or left makes you go top speed immediately.   There are in fact portions of the game where you need to carefully walk/aim at stuff...

A lot of people parrot that "spin dash plays the game for you" thing, but what they then fail to mention is you essentially fly through the level, miss out on all of the powerups/rings/etc.  and then you ultimately do not unlock the extrastages which are actually required to get all of the chaos emeralds/etc. to actually get the right ending.

The spindash is generally required to fling yourself into hard to reach areas/secrets though.   The fact that it lets you fling yourself through the level and skip most of it isn't it's real intent.

As for Mario, do you actually do well holding the run button the whole time? I've beaten SMB, but it wasn't until I stopped holding the run button that I was able to do so. Obviously with practice, you can beat it with the run button down, but I suck.

I almost never walk in those games.

I only stop if there's like, a hammer brother being a dick, or something where you have to wait for a platform to come back.

lol, in the ice-part (I'm talking about SMB 2 USA), I just run the whole time while sliding and ducking under stuff.   Most of the time, I get to the end without stopping.

Everyone else was yelling and screaming while I did it.

lots of "OH OH OH!" "oooooooooooooo! OOOOOOOOOOOO!" and crap as they squirmed around thinking I was going to die.

This is the correct way to play Mario games. Do you use Toad in SMB 2?

I see the Spin-dash as a tacked-on fix to a problem that shouldn't even be there to begin with, and that problem is the horrible momentum, that makes precision platforming in Sanic aggravating and whenever you're not doing that, you're usually holding a direction and occasionally pressing a button or changing the direction while the game bounces you around and makes you go wherever it wants you to... Yeah there are secrets and stuff, but in order to get to them you have to completely interrupt the flow of the game to go look for walls that look off that you might be able to step inside or something like that, and with those terrible physics getting to those places is a chore... In other words, when the game isn't being boring, it's being aggravating... But hey, at least it's being boring with 'tude! That oughtta be enough for dem edgy 90s kidz!

Oh well, I suppose you get something out of those games that I don't, and that's fine...
But to me, after playing 9 games in the series multiple times and enjoying 0, they're just cack, and to add insult to injury, it's spawned the cringiest trend of the 90s...

I first got a Duo back around 2000 or so and Bonk was one of my first games. I gotta say, I didn't really care for it much and played the other games I got. It wasn't until a few years back that I was turbobbing and I gave it another shot. Something just clicked that didn't click before, I love it now.

Does anyone NOT use Toad?

I don't know how you can not enjoy Sonic 3, or not enjoy things like the special stages in Sonic 2.   That stuff is all pretty fun.     Ice Cap zone in 3, and like, the Casino Zone in 2 are pretty f*cking great.

You should just play 1,2,3,Spinball, Knuckles, CD, MAYBE  R and 3D blast on Saturn, and then stop.   There's nothing else to play after that basically.    Sonic Rush or something maybe.   Anything else is basically retarded.  Sonic Colors and all of that completely blew.

1 and 2 on Dreamcast are worth playing too, but those games are strange.

I will agree that the physics momentum can be annoying, but the games are definitely more stimulating to me than Mario once you've gotten used to how to coerce Sonic into not being a hillbilly.

My favorite parts of Mario were always the "auto moving" levels, the ghost house/castles, and the star road levels.  The stuff inbetween was always kind of too easy, and the interacting/secret finding was basically just "fly with the cape and jump off of yoshi to reach a thing".  Super Mario World's secrets were so lame and easy to find without a guide.    I found them all when the game was still new.

That's not to say I hated the game, I just though large parts of it were too easy compared to SMB 3 right before it.

I... am not so sure you're really allowed to comment on "cringiest trends of the 90s", given your age.

The 90s were over before you were done pissing yourself, lol.

what trend are you even talking about?  If you're talking about the whole "being edgy" thing, that wasn't a trend.

That started in the 80s, catapulted through the 90s, and lived on through the 2000s for awhile until everyone started being wussies.

I think the thrasher/skate or die extreme as f*ck attitude reached it's peak in the 90s, and it ruled.

Beanie Babies were the cringiest trend of the 90s.

 I thought it was normal to play with the run button held in the whole time. Even when I need to proceed slowly, I still hold the run button and just tap the control pad more delicately. Nintendo should have just turned it on by default — or better, run by default, and hold the "walk" button to walk.

Yep, Sonic 3 and Knuckles are the worst offenders here. Rather than leaving the special stages as a side distraction after beating a level, you're sucked into them as you find them within the stage itself. Once I realized this, finding them was more of a punishment than a reward because they're inferior to the actual levels, so I avoided them whenever I discovered them, collectathons or "proper endings" be damned. I don't mind bonus stages to throw in some variety, but not while I'm playing a stage. The Donkey Kong Country games also went way overboard with this idea. I think Sonic CD did this too, but regardless, it had that loading screen nonsense every time you changed from past/present/future, and that was enough to kill the momentum in the game for me.

I haven't played any 3D Sonic games, (unless you count the demo to Lost Worlds as having played a 3D Sonic, or 3D blast) I've played all of the Genesis ones, the Master System ones, the NGPC one, a few GBA ones and Sonic 4 on the Wii, of what I played, the closest ones to being decent were the GBA ones, and the absolute worst were 3D Blast and Spinball, Sonic 2 and 3 were in the middle...

I enjoy next to nothing about those games, I don't like the character designs, the gameplay, the music, the controls, the only redeemable things about those games to me are the background graphics which can be nice from time to time...
The only Sonic game I actually had fun with was Sonic Battle on the GBA, and it was mostly because of the 3D backgrounds that I thought were pretty incredible on a dedicated 2D system, even though they look like s***... The fighting was okay-ish, certainly better than the platforming in the other games in the series that I've played, I mean, at least I felt like I was playing the game all the time, unlike the whole rest of the series, and I didn't have to re-do jumps because the acceleration sucked because there wasn't much to jump on, but I certainly wouldn't pick it over the traditional fighters on the GBA (which btw are pretty amazing)

Again, I'll admit that I never took the time to "git gud" at Sonic, but I have neither the drive nor the patience to because I don't like anything else about the games to bother...
Also, this is all a matter of taste, I get that you and lots of other people like Sonic, but I don't, I've played more than enough to know that, and I'm not about to torture myself with any more of the series...

what trend are you even talking about?  If you're talking about the whole "being edgy" thing, that wasn't a trend.

I'm talking about the "Conceived by marketing and built for corporate competition animal mascots with 'tude" trend, basically Bubsy and Awesome Possum only exist because of Sonic...

You have a point about my age, but just because I didn't grow up in the 90s doesn't mean I know jacks*** about the 90s, I don't know about all the crappy trends of the 90s, but I don't know all of the 2000s either because one can't keep up with or remember literally everything that goes on on an entire decade when they're too busy playing games from the decade before, but as far as I'm concerned, "edgy" animal mascots are just the worst...

[Edit]
Alas, I'm done talking about Sanic, I said what I had to say about the series, let's agree to disagree and move on, this thread is about Bonk, and I'd much rather talk about Bonk than Sonic...

We had animal mascots before Sonic, anyways, and I don't know that I'd say edgy animal mascots are the worst.    They're cooler than Monty Mole.   I'd take an edgy XXXTREEEEME 90s animal over a goofy ass Mole in a sweater.

Bonk's an edgy caveman, basically.

Having edgy people would be kind of strange.   For example, Kid Chameleon was corny as f*ck.    Hell Mario and them are kind of dumb to be completely honest, lol.

Aero the Acrobat, Crash Bandicoot, and Gex were good stuff.

and all of this probably helped spawn the DK Country games that made Donkey Kong something besides a villain.

Which 3D blast did you play?  The Genesis one sucks.

and, Sonic Spinball is a love it or hate it game.  You never find people really that are like "its ok".

if you don't like pinball very much, adding that to a game you also don't like probably would never work for you, lol

Monty Mole in a sweater isn't edgy enough for you?  Arrrrrgh, them's fightin' words!  :D  I like him, but like I said, very much an acquired taste, that's for sure.  Never could get into Aero, but Gex is cool, & I love Crash.

Back to Bonk, something I forgot to mention, is that I actually enjoy the Bonk games more then Mario games, & that's considering I bought them as they were released!  So it wasn't a matter of playing Bonk games first, I grew up with Mario, with Mario 2 still being my favorite, & eternally waiting for Nintendo to make a Doki Doki sequel dammit!
