Military Madness (I'm sure you guys know... but...)
« on: May 09, 2017, 12:27:42 PM »
Picked up a copy recently and this game is AWESOME!

I've always enjoyed strategy games, but this one is good enough to make me put down BOTW.

I'm loving the surround and support mechanics.  Really gives you a lot to think about each turn.

Nice to hear it's that good.  I know a lot of people love that game.  It's on my list to buy :)
Started a US TurboGrafx-16 Collection in 2017! ... Then I moved on to PC Engine

If you can, get Neo Nectaris.

Nectaris (Military Madness) is included.

Does Neo Nectaris play well without speaking any Japanese?

Yes because the commands are easy to figure out. Same as military madness for the most part. Might take you 15 minutes of gameplay or so to figure them out.

If you can mess with the US Turbochip or even a TED to play a few maps of MM, you can definitely upgrade to the Neo Nectaris later without moon runes fear. That is what I did. The magic of the game is that it is just enough sim to be interesting but fast enough gameplay to not be a snorefest (looking at you Daisenryaku!).

Music in Neo is epic.

Neo Nectaris is well worth picking up is you like Military Maddness.  The game plays essentially the same.  I was able to beat it and I don't know Japanese.  Music on CD is cool to and it changes depending upon how well you are doing on the map.

This game and Legendary Axe II are my two must haves in owning some TG16 games. (I also want Jackie Chan Kung Fu and Dragon Curse but those are too price for me.)

Military Madness is genuinely fantastic!  I remember the summer of '95 introducing my Sega/Nintendo fanboy friends to the Turbo and this being the one game literally everyone fell in love with.  Many sleepless nights playing this badboy!

There was a NES games that was somewhat akin to it. Desert Commander I think...I used to try and convince the only TurboGrafx owner I knew that it was just as good as MM.

Later having actually PLAYED Military Madness....Man I was a stupid kid with system envy.

I wish they made games like this one too on modern consoles, a untapped old genre that would be relatively easy to pull off today. Advanced wars, and the upcoming advanced wars ripoff are the only modern equivalents I can think if. I love these turn based military strategy games that are lighter on unit stats compared to their pc counterparts. I did not spend a lot of time with Military Madness back in the day, which is a regret of mine, but when I finally did discover it I loved it. Great stuff!

Back at the end of the Turbo's life, Turbo Zone Direct sold a few PCE imports. I ended up ordering Ys IV and Neo Nectaris from them around Christmas. I didn't get too far into Ys IV due to the language barrier, but I had a blast playing Neo Nectaris over break. As others have said, if you've played Military Madness, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out Neo Nectaris. I think all of the commands are in the same order (move,  attack, info, end turn), as are the stats.
