Agreed, Arkhan. There was definitely a reason for shoutbox going down so many years ago, I think I remember it getting flooded by Russian spambots and it just became unbearable. But what I've always wondered is, why didn't it come back after a few months or so? Having chat here used to really connect the community and made communication a few steps easier.

I know ppl don't like IRC but that's kind of ridiculous considering that its been around for like 20 years. f*ck... do I still have my number user id from a back then? Anyway, having chat integrated into the forum is better than leap-frogging to three different sites to talk about stuff.

Talking about Dischord is just creating another problem that will eventually die off just like Paul's chat is supposed to any day now. Why not fix a the problem here? Also I'm aware that this will cause a headache for someone, but couldn't we just try turning shoutbox back on?

If nothing else it will bring more ad revenue to the site.

The "official" story was, that was how we were hacked was via the chatbox......why it never came back was probably due to Aaron being pretty much ghost forever now.

One nice thing about Discord over IRC is that it archives everything. For another, you have avatars and can embed pics and video.

I would also argue that embedding pics and videos is sometimes a bad thing, like when people start droppin Bailey Jay pics.

I always thought that this was the main f*cking problem, that we could just drop some secure, already existing chatroom via a piece of code into a box right below the announcements and adbar. It would also be extra badass if said chatroom were part of a 20-year-old network that's older than AIM.

Anyway, thanks for bringing this up because its a conversation that's needed to happen for years. I'm sure somebody is going to get pissed at us for suggesting that work be done, because it will ultimately be work for someone. Again, I would volunteer my time as I have offered before to the site Administrators to help see it through; I'm a quick study but my coding knowledge is admittedly limited.

you barely need to do any work really.   KiwiIRC.com provides a few-clicks system to get a widget you can paste into the forum layout.

As long as its added to the top banner area, it shouldn't reload between navigation.   

Unless that reloads between navigates too lol

Yes, I would like to see this happen, too. Maybe if we just keep making new threads and bitching about it, we'll eventually get what we want? Or, Necro will come in and shut us all down.

EDIT: I'm going to agree that it'd probably be best not to have image embedding as many people here use the forum at work.

Assuming it can be added without compromising security, I'm all for integrated chat.  Other sites have it and don't seem to get hacked, so why not us too?
