Most horizontal shooters involve too much "dodging stupid shit" like scenery and tiny passageways.

I just want to blow shit up.

Dodging scenery and tiny passageways is what I like about horizontal shooters. When playing vertical ones, I often feel they're missing this, they feel empty to me. That's why I was glad to see Salamander had some vertical stages with scenery obstacles.

They tried to make me do a recap
I said no, no, no

You are right about that. They do have this characteristic. It's kind of different gameplay.

You definitely need an arcade set up at home if you already don't have one so you can enjoy "tate" shmups better. It's really the monitor I don't like to turn on the side the only reason I play mostly "Yoko" shmups.

This is not a trick, but a weird glitch. In Magical chase at the first stage end boss, I died from a very weird glitch. I was adjusting the position of the star children when the robots head came on screen and his head flew across the screen, attached to my character and bled my life force down till I died.

This glitch (or close to it) has been brought up before in the glitch/shortcut/trick thread.  it doesn't appear to be a common problem discussed too often, leading me to believe that this a rarity that your play style brought out and that subsequent versions of the game fixed the issue somewhat.
Hm this is excactly what happened to me except different robot part. It was the torso and not the head in my experience.
I am happy this is not the cart broken. Of course if I knew for sure that the fan edition isn't glitched, I would have gone for that one.

In the same frequency of play I encountered the glitch again but I did kill the boss easily even with glitch. You are not convicted to restart if the glitch happens.

Just to clarify,

(1) you are not "forced" to restart if the glitch occurs (there *is* a chance for success)

OR

Sometimes the glitch totally drains you, regardless of what you do?

:)

I am just curious. I never saw the glitch.

I played through the first level ten times last night, and no glitches.

On the plus side, there's a few details I never noticed before (or forgot): the flying pigs make a little grunting noise when you shoot 'em, Ripple looks surprised/mad instead of the usual sleeping pose if you pause after she's hit, and there's little road signs (mile markers and boss warnings) along the path that weren't used in the US version.

Today the tin robot came and stuck behind me so no problem because I could fire straight ahead. I think the previous time it stuck in front of me so all my fire couldn't pass through the tin. But I need to confirm the last one because I don't remember 100%.

The tin doesn't drain health

Is there a chance this happens to my cart only?? ](*,)

It's hard to tell.  I've no idea if the rom I have is the original or pce fan re-release (or if those are even different roms in the first place), nor if it's a glitch only triggered by certain actions that I'm not doing, like it only happens if you're using a certain weapon, have a specific number of heart containers, broom speed, number and type of 'bomb' items, etc.

You are right. It could be anything. I played always with the triple wide shot. have added a heart container and bought the 3rd option in speed menu ( I don't know what it does)
BTW while the game is in Japanese I don't really understand what are those selling in store other than the weapons and the extra heart container on the down right. I do understand what the blue bottle does though...
I don't understand about speed and what are those that fill my gauge on the right / hearts, spheres and X s

I've only played the PC Engine version, and can't read Japanese, but I think this is what the shop items do:

Speed: ordered from slowest to fastest. You start in the middle. Speeding up is always the first thing I do.

Fruit: one extra heart.

Elixir: automatically refills your hearts when you get down to zero.

Heart: use this to refill one heart. You use items by hitting II twice in a row. Items are used in the order that they are displayed, left to right: you can't choose which is used first.

Circle: use this item to launch a bomb that hits all enemies on screen.

X: I'm the fuzziest on this item. I think it makes your shot more powerful for a short period of time.

Incidentally, I have the Super PC Engine Fan edition, and haven't encountered this glitch.

I love this thread.

(1) Shop Items (I never paid much attention to the shop)
(2) The glitch itself

I found a glitch in PlayStation R-Type 1 that I have been able to recreate 2-3 times, but I haven't found documented online (at least, when I looked years and years ago).

Why bring that up?

Because it was so frustrating when other folks couldn't recreate the glitch, even though I had isolated it to specific conditions (to the best of my understanding, anyway).

:)

I don't have this game, sadly, but when I have "free time" and get my TED working, I'll investigate.

I played yesterday just for the glitch about11-12 times. I was using Bulkan instead of 3-way, speed up, 1 extra heart and the elixir. Played 8 times with the above setup but the glitch didn't trigger. I chose 2-3 times the 3-way (as when I discovered the glitch), speed up, 1 extra heart container, 1 elixir. Still nothing. I then quited.

Today I played once with 1 credit to the fith Boss. No glitch.

Maybe being newbie in the game I chose fancy things from the shop that I don't remember. Sure thing for the glitch is the 3-way shot along with some unspecific items though...

Thanks for your help, in the meanwhile I descovered most of the items. I think X is canceling incoming bullets.

Can you choose what help item to trigger each time or you trigger those with the turn you bought them?

Do you know if the guy who wrote that in 2013 still has his Magical Chase copy?
Small world there may be a possibility he sold it and I got it.
At least if I knew his copy is the second print or a different than mine....

This has happened to me once already with a rare MVS Kizuna Encounter. Those MVS serials leave trails easily...It wasn't deffective but I could find 2 owners before me

IDK if HercTnT is around these days.  maybe on another forum you've run into him. I haven't seen him post in a while around here.
NW: Hey, I made it on this psycho's Enemies' List, how about that ?? ;)

BT: Look at how the fake SFII' carts instantly sold out and were immediately listed on eBay before the flippers even took possession. Look at Nintendo's overpriced bricks. Look at the typical forum discussions elsewhere.
