One of the HARDCAW crew just got ripped off
« on: August 04, 2017, 05:25:51 PM »
One of our group, very regular cat at MGC, VGS, TurboFest Brandon Davis just had his car broken into.  They took his Neo Geo AES, and 6 games.  Looking at setting a fund to help him out any way we can.

It's a sad story, but I think a lesson was learned. Don't leave expensive shit in your car.

Tale as old as time. The shittiest part could be, if it was obscured it was someone that knows him. If it was out in the open, that was a poor decision. I remember some years ago a friend of mine had $5,000+ of MTG cards stolen out of his locked truck and the cards were in the glove box and nothing else was taken, so it was very deliberate.

Whoever took it better keep it for life. The Neo world is small enough to possibly find a guy like this if he sells it.

They broke into the car in his parents driveway.  It was in a dufflebag.

Probably some random piece of shit that saw a bag and went IMA TAKE THAT, and then opened it and went what the f*ck is this thing did I do good.

Probably yeah.  I try not to leave even my backpack in my car(or at least showing) even though it just contains bottle water, deoderant, & some El Pollo Loco coupons.  I can totally see someone saying HEY, there must be something worth something in there!  So they break into my car just to get it.

Good to know more particulars, thanks Ark. And what a piece of shit the thief is.

Given the value of the items I would file a claim with your homeowners insurance, usually item theft from vehicles is covered (at least it is for me)

I leave like nothing of value in my car because of this kind of crap.  My work actually has a policy that you need to sign when you get your laptop that says you agree never to leave it in your car unattended, not even the trunk or else you are on the hook for replacement cost.

I own a Miata and I've heard all the jokes, wrote many of them myself.

People who own the earlier cars for a long time eventually develop a routine for keeping everything safe.

In a Miata, as in any car, you don't want leave stuff unattended, but it goes beyond that. It's *really* easy to break into an open car with a folding fabric roof and no security system. A box cutter will cut a nice sized hole in the top making it easy to reach in and unlock. So even if you have nothing in the car worth anything, a guy on a streak of car crimes is probably still going to trash your top just to see what's in the car.

Therefore, I never lock the car, or the storage areas in it. The most valuable thing anyone is likely to "take" (by virtue of destroying it) is my top. Those are like $500+ and installation not being fun.

People probably *have* been in my car, they've just never stolen anything because nothing was in it. This is maybe a lesson for some far thinking regarding possessions, the idea of worth, crime, etc but I'll let you figure that out.

Regarding the car itself, with a racing seat, a rollbar, a hardtop, and a stick shift its probably too hard for half the population to even fit in in 2017 and chances are they can't drive a standard shift anyway. The best security system there is.

In my town a few weeks ago, some guys with guns went to rob this girl and steal her car. Once they realized her car was stick shift, they kidnapped her so she could drive the car. She managed to live through it, but the dudes got away. This world is f*cked.

zeta that sounds like a nice little track day car as well.
NW: Hey, I made it on this psycho's Enemies' List, how about that ?? ;)

BT: Look at how the fake SFII' carts instantly sold out and were immediately listed on eBay before the flippers even took possession. Look at Nintendo's overpriced bricks. Look at the typical forum discussions elsewhere.

You can't tell most retro gamers anything!

I never lock my car or interior stuff. If someone is desperate enough to steal a $6 phone charger, so be it.

In California, I would routinely leave my old water bottles and Diet Coke cans in my car.

The next day, they were removed from the passenger seat.

Nothing else taken or disturbed.

Now, EAST COAST, nobody takes my recycling from my car for me.
