Start of Darkness
« on: December 06, 2017, 07:42:46 AM »
Well, I did it. I took the plunge and now have a CoreGrafx on the way. What have I done to myself? Any recommendations on cheaper games that are still worth playing?

The Everdrive is a fantastic game.  Pretty cheap.

Get one.

lol now that you did that, I feel like the first things you need to play are:

China Warrior
Bonks Adventure
Keith Courage
Dungeon Explorer
Alien/Devils Crush

and then go apeshit on shooters

Congratulations!  I also recommend an everdrive, though there's still a lot of hueys that aren't too terribly pricey (less than original MSRP anyway).  Some of my favorite cheapish hueys are Bomberman 93 and 94, Bonk 1 and 2, Dragon Spirit, Aoi Blue Blink, Hatris, Kung Fu, Dungeon Explorer, Energy (play the translated and fixed rom on the TED), Galaga 88, Super Star Soldier, Dorabean Nights, and Dead Moon.

For sidescrollers you won't find better than these

Bonk 1 and 2
New Adventure Island
Ninja Spirit
Liquid Kids
SonSon II
Wonder Boy 3 Dragon Trap
Ninja Gaiden
Legendary Axe 1 and 2

Shooters don't get better than these

Salamander
Atomic Robo Kid
Mr Heli
Soldier Blade
Gunhed
W-Ring
Gradius
Darius Plus
Galaga 88

Super Dodgeball is also a must play

If you want Taito and Namco games, stick to HuCard. Falcom games were only on CD. Games by Technos and Compile were published by Naxat usually. Capcom and Konami had some even distribution. If you love Hudson, you're in luck for dozens of games, because they made the pc engine.

Great list. Salamander and Galaga '88 were my go-tos when I first got a PC-Engine, favorites to this day.

Gekisha Boy with the English patch is tops for fun Japanese uniqueness. A must play.

Thanks, guys! I'm anxious to get it set up. I'm going to start with the lists here and see where I end up.

Hey, I'm preparing for the arrival of my Coregrafx and I had was wondering if I should be using a voltage converter. I know the voltage is a bit higher here than in Japan. If so, does anyone have one they can recommend? Most of the ones I found on eBay and Amazon convert from European voltage to US or vice versa, which isn't that helpful.

Where are you from?

If you live in the US, a converter doesn't really matter. You can even use an official genesis power supply if you want.

I've never bothered and not had any problems with using my RX, CGI, and PC-FX just plugged into the wall.  US is close enough to JP specs.

Yeah, most of these things, especially replacement bricks, can handle more than what's stated.   Putting components that are running at their maximum capacity would be doofy.

If this was a problem, I am sure my duo and pce that were left on for 8+ hrs at a time at conventions would have blown up by now.

I've had people yell at me for not using a convertor on my MSX.  They're all mostly Europeans, with their goofy ass connectors and 220v nonsense

Nominal mains voltage in Europe changed to 230 V AC in the recent years, with a tolerance of plus/minus 23 V. Keep those angry pixies coming.
