Another Piece of the 80's Lost...
« on: March 15, 2018, 03:37:48 AM »
I really hate seeing this, even though they've been in trouble for a while. I have so many fond memories of trips to ToysRUs, and standing mesmerized by their wall of games for all systems. Best selection anywhere.

Later in it's life, Toys R Us was the only place in town that carried Turbo stuff.  I got a lot of stuff from them so I'll be sad to see them go.

After we heard on the news that all Toys R Us locations would be closing in 6 weeks I went with my girlfriend to check out the local one.  She got a lot of her Sega games from them so she had similar feelings about the store.  It had a sign up stating that it was going to stay open so I'm not sure what the status is on it or all other stores.

I'll always remember the "Toys R Us Kids" commercials that I would see during Saturday morning cartoons.
Current want list:  Bomberman 93

The last TG-16 item I ever bought retail was Vasteel in... 1994?

Not sure about the date, but it probably wasn’t earlier than 1994...maybe even 1995?

Yeah, there's a great video on this topic from when they initially declared bankruptcy. It wasn't that their business was THAT bad, but issues due to a leveraged buyout over a decade ago.

I shop toys r us. But that trend only started once I became a father.

However. It always felt items where higher priced on average. True they price match but still. Toys r us has never been a first place to stop for games and such.

As a kid. Well I loved it as a kid. It was never my money and Wall tk wall toys.

The store still has some really good stuff in it, but it's prices aren't great and it's website is awful.  I often wonder how mega retailers didn't decide to dump a ton of money into their websites once Amazon started stealing their business.  Now it's too little too late for most, but 5-10 years ago there was still a chance.

I loved this store as a kid and even seeing the commercial filled me with joy.  I didn't get to go too much, my family knew I'd want everything and we didn't have the money to oblige my greed, but it was always an a huge treat when I did go.

Kids hate toys now anyway, cell phones and tablets are all they want.

Yes, VidPro cards and bringing the paper slip to the cashier to get the game from a cage was a large part of many peoples childhoods. And it stuck around for a long time, I remember getting Panzer Dragoon Saga that way in 1998 before they had the R-Zone section specifically for games.

Kids want to watch other kids playing with toys on youtube now.

As far as not putting more money into websites it's the same short sighted decision making that led to Blockbuster not buying out Netflix for peanuts when they had the chance.

Yeah it lasted up to the saturn,n64 and PS1 era.Afther that games were sold on the shelf.I remember when i was a kid i use to live not far from a tru, often i walk down to it buy nes games. When blades of steel first came out i didn't see a card or paper slips. So i went down to the booth and ask and i was able to buy the game regardless.
