Turbo Duo wants to roleplay an original Sony Playstation
« on: April 09, 2018, 06:52:17 AM »
I've got a fairly weird problem into my hands: my Turbo Duo simply can't focus properly on tracks without inclining it in an almost 45 degree angle (it works perfectly in that position ). I'll test with legitimate cds later but it's happening with all my Taiyo Yudens.

I hope this isn't a matter of buying a new laser pickup. Sigh.

Standard things apply: recap, clean board of any cap juice, check for damaged traces and open vias, tune pots, and then a new laser if everything else fails.

this might be an odd question but is your DUO set up near any other game consoles? If so, move it away from them and see what happens. Also try unplugging any other game consoles from any wall outlets in the general vicinity.

Also, are the Discs you are using ones that worked prior? Some of these systems work better with one type of CDR media over another.

This was worked on before by a forum member (Keith?) but I don't know who specifically because I bought it "second-hand" from another forums member (which I don't remember too -- sorry!).

I'll try the troubleshooting when I get the time. It's just weird that the CDR focus/seeking is corrected mechanically by tilting the console haha. I wouldn't discard the eletromag interference hypothesis.

To be quite honest CDRs never worked well, but I have beaten JB Harold before on this system with voices on and there was never a problem reading anything. Maybe I should just buy an RX to stop worrying about burned games.

Well, it was a matter of adjusting laser power. I messed with the laser pot and now everything works well (except for the last track laser jam duos are known for). Even Gulliver Boy worked flawlessly streaming its FMV.

While it's a relief it's also a "oh no" moment since I had to increase laser power. Better buy another laser just in case. You might argue that I shouldn't be running cdrs in the first place but I need to test my homebrew builds too :P

Thanks for the help ^^
