Hyperkin Controller Experience - It Sucks
« on: September 10, 2021, 04:36:12 PM »
So over labor day weekend Stone Age Gamer put the hyperkin specialist Turbo/PCE controller on sale and as part of another order decided to pick one out and in testing there's an immediate flaw. It seems as though there is some problem with the rubber pad for the RUN button overlapping with pushing down select, meaning on CD games if you casually press run it might just reset. I would advise against buying one of these.

Wow, that's a pretty huge flaw. I'm surprised they made it out like that. Yeesh.

Sheesh, that's crazy.  Did they not test at all or is yours defective?

Reset isn't just for CDs either.  There's a few games where it's been disabled, but generally it works in any game, huey or disc.

Not sure, I'm not buying another one to find out. I may send it to the chospital to see if replacing the rubber pads is possible or some other workaround can be found.

This is the first I've heard of the run button overlapping with Select.

I know the D-pads have this problem. Lots of times when pushing right or left in Rondo of Blood, The special attack will get used because it is also partialy pushing Down at the same time. Simply changing out the rubber membrane for the D-pad fixes the issue. I have no idea why hyperkin hasn't just swapped out the D-pads themselves yet. They could at least include a spare that people can use if wanted.

So the start+select issue can probably be resolved with a replacement set of pads as well.

I have a lot of controller repair kits for other systems, lying around so I may wind up trying that. It's aggravating when I have to mod a new from the factory product to get it into fully working order.

An update, Chop5 and I took the controller apart and he discovered a seemingly chopped in half resistor over the select button. Just touching parts of the controller board when plugged in was causing it to register select presses as it wasn't grounded correctly. Terrible QA on this product.

So the top one is 'before'?  What the fuck, hyperkin?!?

Please shit on them on bookface or twatter.  Maybe you'll scare off some future customers or get them to actually improve (one in a hundred chance), or maybe we'll get some lulz.

Yeah. top one is before. I made a twitter account and basically never use it, but unless you're handy with soldering.. don't buy one of these.

Is this Hyperkin controller at least somewhat functional after adding that 47k resistor?

If not, then it's really a shame that this product is about as bad as their simple passthrough AV out adapter for the TG16. Everywhere I've seen, it's highly not recommended to use the composite video from the TG16 expansion port as-is, it needs to be buffered correctly like how the Turbo Booster does it.

Yes, after the repair it does work. And yeah, RetroRGBob has gone on at length regarding how the hyperkin AV port accessory is out of spec and Hyperkin doesn't care.

Well, it does look alright to hold. If I find a used one, I'd like to get one to try out. It's really great to have a known fix for it as well.

The D-pad has been causing people problems regardless of the resistor issue. I've heard from many people that claim the special move in Rondo of Blood keeps getting set off even without pushing up on the controller. Changing the rubber d-pad membrane fixes the problem.
