My brother entered a silly superbowl contest...
« on: November 29, 2006, 09:43:12 AM »
UPDATE 12.05.06: My brothers visited me on Sunday and said, "Hey, let's make two more entries for the Doritos SuperBowl contest." Well, I was feeling rather lazy and I kept trying to convince them to forget about the Doritos contest and just watch a movie with me instead.

Of course, they ultimately persuaded me to help them and now you can see the results:

KungFuDorito

Originally, my brothers wanted me to wear the karate + lucha libre outfit. I said, "Hell no, it's FREEZING outside." And it was. It was friggin' ice cold and that karate outfit is made of tissue-paper-thin material.

FACT: We had to stop filming because we were frozen and the sun had set.
FACT: At 10:30 last night, my brothers started editing this film. By 11:45 they had to upload it in order to make the contest deadline (at midnight).
FACT: They told me that they didn't have time to decide what the best shots were, or to clean up the editing, so don't get too excited. Also, they were using Windows' "MovieMaker" and it kept crashing / slowing down on them -- they can't believe they were able to finish at all.

And now, as if that wasn't enough, here is the second entry:

Desperate for Doritos

Yes, that's me. Now you can understand why I initially didn't want to help my brothers! And my poor wife came home late Sunday night to find us pleading with her to do those two short scenes where she knocks on the door. I'm sure that Frito-Lay does not want Doritos associated with unsavory things like toilets, but my brothers were unwilling to compromise on their "vision".

FACT: Doritos do get soggy when submerged in water.
FACT: The sound you hear when the chip bounces off the rim is real, but slowed down to 1/4 speed, or so my brother informs me.

------------ Original Post ------------------
Hi folks. :)
My brother made this for a silly contest. It's a commerical with my daughter in it.

He filmed this a few days ago and said that he didn't realize how short 30 seconds was (the maximum length for entries). The final product you see is a simplistic montage... but the original footage was much more involved.

Just thought you might enjoy this :).

BONUS ANECDOTE: Since my brother let my daughter eat TONS of Doritos, she is now asking for them all the time. All she wants to eat are Doritos. :( Doritos = garbage, so I feel like a horrible parent.

Edit: I don't know if the video works in FF (Win). I have only seen it on IE6 (Win).

Very cute. I would consider buying Doritos after watching that commercial.

I cringed when she used the scissors though.

Hahahaha. She loves scissors :), although thankfully she has stopped slicing holes in her shirts (I suppose paper gets boring after a few minutes).

In the original footage, she sees someone put the scissors in a dresser drawer. Then, when she can't open the bag with her hands, she goes to the dresser. But she's too short. So she goes across the room, grabs a chair, climbs atop it, opens the drawer and finally obtains the scissors.

During this entire sequence, she is holding a huge bag of Doritos that is almost as big as she is.

Needless to say, this was too much to condense in a 30 second entry :(.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

You should use that footage, just use quicker cuts so you can cram more in there.  30 seconds is plenty of time, you should watch some shitty commercials to see just how much story you can cram into 30 seconds.

Yeah it seems those commercials on TV are able to cram a lot more in just 30 seconds. Don't get me started on how much a person can cram info into a 20 minute repeated infomercial :D .

I know, but he told me that the "action" is drawn out and moves slowly, so he'd literally have a montage of 30 1-second clips.... it would look like a series of still pictures :(.

If you go to the official site of the contest ( http://www.crashthesuperbowl.com ) you'll see lots of entries that cram a lot in there. My favorite is the "Mountain Climber" ad!

Thanks for telling me about that. I fixed the link (I hope). The original link simply went to a page with tons of videos, and you had to scroll down to the 4th or 5th row to find my brothers' entry. Hopefully there is a direct link now :).

You don't think you can YouTube these videos, can you? I'm not getting anything from clicking those links. :(

Sorry, but I don't see your library card on the books of Ys.  Now, RETURN THEM TO ME!!!

The links should work. Turn of adblock if you're using that Firefox extension.

As for YouTube, I'll ask my brothers to put it there, but I don't know if they're interested in YouTube at the moment.

As for the contest, unfortunately, the top 5 finalists have been chosen and I think the judges chose very professional, hi-def stuff instead of "amateur" productions. Oh well :).

Who isn't interested in YouTube nowadays? It's got to be the most visited site on the web that isn't porn. :P

hahahahahahaa. I suppose it is (I don't go there much myself), but my brothers aren't particularly proud of the stuff they've done so far. They want to make better stuff before sharing it with folks.

I'll still ask them, though :).
