"It's better on the Turbo!!"
« on: April 04, 2024, 10:27:43 PM »

1) Exile.  Try playing the Genesis version AFTER this one, or even worse, on the MSX2, and you'll see what I mean.

2) Lords of Thunder.  The graphics still look better on the Turbo, and the lack of narration adds to the power of the music.

3) Emerald Dragon.  I heard that the FM Towns version has all the music, and the SNES one has an English translation, but the voice acting and cut scenes of the Turbo are AWESOME!!!

4) Ys IV.  I heard the SNES one is canon, but it's such a murky disappointment in comparison to the Turbo!

Okay, that's just a few.  Feel free to add any others!

I did enjoy Crystal Beans on the SFC, but it's still nothing in comparison to DE II!

Gain Ground!  The TG has the best version.  It looks and sounds great, and while easier than any other version, is still fun to play.  It's just too bad they didn't give it any cinematics.

The SNES version of Mask of the Sun(there's also a PS2 version of Mask of the Sun) used to be the cannon storyline, I believe mainly because Dawn of Ys had Sara surviving, but canonically in Ys 1, she died. Plus Arem was an addition from Hudson.  Now, the cannon story of Ys 4 is Memories of Celceta, which is a great game, but I still prefer Dawn of Ys as the superior Ys 4.

I didn't know Exile was also on the TG16, but other than Valis, who's PC Engine CD port is the definitive version of the game, one game I think is better on the Turbo is a game that was originally a SEGA arcade game, that being "Fantasy Zone". That is my favorite version of the game followed by Tengen's unlicensed NES port.

The PC Engine port of Shinobi is the best port it had back when.  It's still missing stage 2, bonus stage, and hand-to-hand attacks so it's not exactly arcade perfect, but it plays pretty well and looks good.  If you compare it to the other console versions from back then, you'll really see how it easily sweeps away the competition.

fantasy zone got eclipsed by a recent homebrew genesis port, unfortunately. same with super darius and soon to be...R-Type

Tatsujin (Truxton) in the arcade and the MD port are both marred by tinny, irritating instrumentation causing what should be great songs to turn into real ear bleeders. The PCE port fixes this with a soundtrack that's much warmer and satisfying.

As for Raiden we got an even better port on down the road in the form of an upgraded Super CD port with arcade accurate explosions and such. Owning both the card and CD are worth it IMO.

I think SFII CE is overall a better game than SFII SCE.

Music, graphics, voices/sound, and colours. It's better on all accounts. For controls, it's pretty similar, with the Genesis pulling off some extra flash in order to make it "special".

It also doesn't have a million combos removed.  The PCE version plays more accurate to the arcade versions of WW, CE, and HF that were on SNES and Genesis.  Special CE was by and large HF with CE palettes and not all the improvements Capcom added in to HF.  It's a weird game that managed to be less fun than both CE and HF while being better than neither at the thing they do well.
