Recording Genesis and Master System games with capture card
« on: December 14, 2006, 04:34:24 PM »
I received a capture card for my birthday yesterday and loving it. I tried recording some Genesis footage tonight but the screen had a wavey look to it. I've tried it with a model 1 Genesis using AVs, as well as Master System (with the same AVs) and a CDX but all have the wavey picture, though CDX has a cleaner overall picture (none of those thick vertical lines you see on model 1 Genesis). Is there any way around this? My capture card doesn't support RF, but my brother's does and I'll mess with that later to ese if it eliminates the wave. And before you guys jump on me, NO I am not doing a component mod for any of my consoles :) .

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Well first and foremost you can get rid of the vertical bars on the model 1 Genesis simply by adding a 32X.

Secondly, your capture card might not be able to properly handle 240p.  It sees a non480i signal and doesn't know what to do with itself.  Try capturing the two player mode from Sonic 2, which is 480i.  How does it look?

Thanks for the info, I'll try out Sonic 2's split screen mode and post what happens. In the mean time, here is a video I made recording Shadow Blasters http://www.lazerdorks.org/~keranu/shadowblasters.mpg . You can really tell the waveyness in the level and character select screens since they have a lot of straight lines.

Ok I tried Sonic 2's vs mode and it still looks wavey.

That looks to me like a bad VCR tape.  Not sure what could be causing this.  Does it do this on Turbo games?  How about FM Towns games?  Have you tried capturing any Colecovision games?

I've tried a few PCE games the night I got it and they worked fine. I've also tried the Master System as I have mentioned, but haven't tried anything else yet. If I had an FM Towns, you know I'd totally have that hooked up already :D .

Is it all wavy when you try to capture porn?

I'm going to have to say it's just the way your capture card reacts to Genesis video for some reason.  Try capturing it with a properly installed 32X, yo.

I can't get the video to play off the bat right now, but upload it to YouTube, make it a temporary private video and I'll see if I can come up with a verdict.

It looks like bad time base correction or something.

Have you tried recording with an RF switch? Does your card record cable TV?

Are you lining out the audio through the Genesis' stereo headphone jack or just straight through the A/V cable?

Turbo Duo's often lose picture quality on some TV's if both left and right sound cables aren't fully connected.

My capture card doesn't have RF, but I did test the RF on my brother's capture card and it didn't have the waviness (though it had bad picture, of course).

The audio is coming straight from the mono AV cable, though I was thinking about lining the audio through the headphone jack. I'll have to mess with that later and post results.

Have you tried a different cable?  I demand that you do.  And if you don't, I'll.... do nothing.

As mentioned in my first post, I have tried it out with a CDX, which uses a different cable, and still got the same results :( . Also as posted, I get the same problem when using the Master System hooked up with the mono AV cables of my model 1 Genesis. I'll try messing with some other hardware too, like DVD players, PC-FX, SNES, etc...

Dude, you can't expect me to read your posts and be informed before I reply.  That's just completely ridiculous.

Have you tried the AV in on your brother's capture card?  No, not RF, but AV in?
