Slowdown in Rayxanber II
« on: December 15, 2006, 07:42:54 AM »
So, I bought Rayxanber II recently and I really like it, and I'm doing well at it--at least, up until the latter part of stage 4.

That's when the game starts getting hit by MASSIVE slowdown.  It slows down so badly that my guns can no longer fire, and it even automatically pauses itself on occasion when things get really bad (it actually plays the pause jingle and everything, and I have to press Run to get it going again).  Then, when a few enemies go away, it suddenly decides to speed up again, which is also irritating.

Now, I'm not one to make excuses for losing.  But when there are four unpredictable bouncing rock-things, four relentless alien-things, and a huge snake-thing all on the screen at once and I can't even fire at them, well, I'd say I'm at an unfair disadvantage.

The disc is in excellent shape and my system is in perfect working condition.  I'm playing the game on my old TG16+TGCD setup.  I have two questions:

1) Does this part of the game run any more smoothly when you play it on Magic Engine?  I don't dabble in emulation much at all, but I'd look into it if it could help me play the game the way it's meant to be played.

2) I don't know anything about tech stuff, so I'm wondering if it might help if I played the game on my Duo-R (perhaps with the Arcade Card Duo inserted) instead of on the TG+CD combo.  My Duo-R is stored away right now and I'd rather not drag it out if there's no chance of it alleviating the problem.

This is frustrating because I like the game a lot and I feel that I'm really getting good at it, and I believe that the wall I've hit has nothing to do with me not being up to the challenges it's throwing at me.

Thanks for any help!

I beat the game with Magic Engine and experienced no problems that you mentioned.

Let me buy your copy of Rayxanber II and I'll tell you what I experience. I can test it on TG-16 +TG-CD, Duo and PCE + SuperCD. I'm partially joking, but not really since I would like to play this game.

Thanks, perhaps that's the route I'll travel.

Heh, I'll give it a spin on my Duo-R sometime and report back.  Aside from this slowdown issue, it's definitely worth the $28 or so it costs.

I've had none of the problems you mentioned on my TurboGrafx-16 + CD-ROM.  Have you tried overclocking your Turbo's CPU?  Everyone does it.  Or try to disengage the slow motion button.

Seriously though, try it with a different controller.

I tried it on my Duo-R and experienced the same problems.  So I checked with Matt (from Wolfgames) because I know he's a Rayxanber 2 fan, and he said it's not just my copy; the issues with the slowdown and weaponry in that stage are indeed part of the game.

So for folks who haven't purchased it yet and plan on playing it on their actual systems, keep these things in mind.  (The game still rules, by the way.)

Damn you, now you're gonna make me play it to see if that happens to me!  I haven't played the game in years and probably can't get up to the end of stage four.  Maybe I'll use a Game Genie.

The game actually pauses during that level? You're sure you didn't have a "slowmo" button on or something like some controllers have? Very, very weird!

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

I do wish!  I tried it and only made it midway through the second level before I became disinterested.  It's one of those games that set you waaaaay back and take all of your weapons away when you die (aka: bad game design).  I'm glad I didn't pay anything at all for this game, though the music would have been worth it if I had.  Are there any cheats or whatnot for this game?  I remember hating part 3 so much more as I couldn't even make it past level 1 no matter what.

HAHA you couldn't make it past level 1 on part 3?  Time to hang up the ol' controller man, your best days are behind you.

Yeah, and they say 3 is easier than 2.  I could make it decently far in part 2, but part 3 was just crazy!  Or maybe I was disinterested in it due to it being inferior to part 2 or something.  It was a loooong time ago and can't remember well.

But I can beat Super Monkey Ball on the hardest level, no problem.  People seem to think that easy game is tough is for some reason.

Not to sound like a broken record, but I'll buy these games from you if you are interested in selling them. :)

I don't own Rayxanber 3, I only borrowed it from friend for few days many years ago.  I'm a collector, so I wouldn't sell Raisin Bar 2 and there is no way in hell I'd ever sell Super Monkey Ball!

Has anyone seriously listened to the voices that say "Rayxanber!!!" at the beginning of the title screen in Rayxanber II?  Just listen to them.  Every time I hear them, I think a bunch of old retarded men are saying it:
