Hello Everyone! New to the forums
« on: February 28, 2007, 05:29:31 PM »
Hi! Have been a big fan of the pc-engine for a while. I lived in Canada and now reside in Japan and want to pick up a nice collection of pc-engine titles. Could you guys give me some suggestions as to which titles to pick up for PC-engine. Any genre or time period is fine. I like all kinds of genres. Also, a small description of the game and why you like it would be greatly appreciated thank you!

Cheers!

Welcome to the forums!

I'm going to recommend RANMA 1/2 - TORAWARE NO HANAYOME, the second Ranma game and the best Digital Comic on the PC Engine. Even with only rudimentary katakana knowledge, I really enjoyed playing through this. Even if you're only mildly familiar with Ranma 1/2, it's still a really funny game and has great graphics. If you've not tried a digital comic before and are curious, this is probably the best place to start.

Welcome aboard!  Pick up Gunhed for some great shooter fun, PC Genjin 2 for a little platforming bliss (or Dracula X if you've sold a kilo and want to blow your excess cash), and Ys I & II for your RPG needs.  Of course if you're shooting for a brain hemorrhage, Deep Blue is hard to beat.

Hi dood. All you need is Ys IV - the best game on the system.

Welcome :).

Tell us if you have a PCE-only or if you will have the ability to play CD games. Also, are you interested in text-heavy games?

Someone should copy-n-paste links to the older threads...

Dodge Danpei, a frickin' sweet obscured dodgeball RPG that's fun as hell (and two players).

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Well, there are tons of fun games, but here are some popular ones:

1. Ankoko Densetsu -- Billed as "Legendary Axe 2" in North America, this a great hack-n-slash platformer. There is a wee bit of exploration the first time through, but when you replay it, you'll probably follow the most direct paths through the game. One of the best, brooding HuCard soundtracks and a somber atmosphere / aesthetic to match it (I love the stage with lightning...). Excellent game, all around, with interesting bosses. Plus, for a game with minimal storyline, there's a plot twist!

2. Narazumo no Sentou Butai Bloody Wolf -- Again, a great soundtrack. Aside from some slowdown, this is a gem. Nice, albeit generic, selection of weapons (although you do get to ride a machine-gun-equipped motorcycle!) Personally, I like the fact that you can jump in this game (adds a *tiny* dash of platforming to certain segments of the game). A variety of stages with different objectives keeps the game interesting (from all-out action on a raft to methodical exploration of a large prison camp to free prisoners). Again, for a game with a minimal storyline, there's a great plot twist... Hmmmmm, there seems to be a theme with my mini-reviews...

3. Soldier Blade -- If you dig horizontal shooters, check this "installment" of Star Soldier. I like all of the Star Soldier games, but most folks claim SB is superior. It's a great game, regardless.

I'll stop there... :)

I just found out that it is a CD based title. Eventually, I will get a DUO and check this one out for sure. Looks interesting. I remember watching the anime a while back and thought it was great.

By "obscured" do you mean rare and hard to find. Or just not so well known?

Awesome!

Also thanks for the link to that website. That is the most comprehensive guide\list of pcengine I have seen on the web!

I am getting bloody wolf for sure. I remember playing it at one point and loved it. Legendary Axe 2 looks cool too. I will probably pick up the other two titles as well cause I saw them for pretty cheap in Akihabara :)

Afterburner 2,Ninja Spirit,Splatterhouse,and Salamander.

I remember Ninja Spirit, That game kicks ass. How good is Afterburner 2 on pcengine. Is it worth getting if you own it on mega drive. I will probably get it too just for collection purposes lol.

Anything from Konami on pcengine I will pick up. Salamander, Gradius, Parodius etc.

Thanks guys! Now I have devised quite a list to hunt down. Should be fun :)

Please feel free to suggest more games that you think I should track down!

CDs are where it's at when it comes to PCE.  While you're in Japan, check out Yahoo auctions. You can get some killer deals through that thing.
