Whoa, so video games _don't_ make me shoot people?!
« on: March 07, 2007, 05:30:17 AM »
Was just looking through my alma mater website, and came through an interesting article.  Anyone with half a brain would think this kinda stuff is obvious, but it's amazing how lotta people get totally brainwashed by the media.

"Politicians and media play the blame game, avoiding root causes of youth violence, USC sociologist Karen Sternheimer finds."
http://www.usc.edu/uscnews/stories/13531.html

Closing statements were key -
Quote
“They don’t offer much insight as to why a few isolated kids, and not the millions of others who play these games, decided to pick up real weapons and shoot real people,” Sternheimer said.

Two other more recent studies in leading journals could not support a finding of increased aggression among players of violent video games. Sternheimer found their results were rarely cited in news accounts.

This is why the mainstream media are becoming more and more irrelevant to young people.

Did you know the _average_ CNN viewer is 65 years old? (half of them are older yet.) I don't think that's because they appeal to the elderly, so much as they have driven away the young folks, with the very kind of 'videogames caused columbine' crap that virtually everyone under the age of 30 knows is false.

Interesting article T_T.  It's hard to understand why the entertainment industry gets the blame for youth violence.  As far as I know, there was cruelty and brutality before TV, movies, and video games; and there's plenty of violence in parts of the world that have limited access to 'violent' entertainment.

If anything, video games serve to make violence more CREATIVE, so yeah we should totally embrace it. ^_^

J/K, this is total bullshit. I try and avoid the news, it's either complete lies, pointless shit, or stuff I already know. So I could live in a world where media didn't exist. Maybe it shouldn't. I mean, media's job is to inform us right? How many of you feel informed, seriously, show of hands here, how many?

This sensationalistic/yellow journalism needs to just f*cking stop before I'll give a shit about what happens in the world around me.
