Arcade Card Pro Case Size
« on: March 07, 2007, 09:39:40 AM »
I'm curious folks - I went to use my Arcade Card Pro and started thinking about its thicker jewel case.  Quite a few games came in the standard size double jewel case, but did any other games or syscards come in an odd sized case like the Pro?  Did the Games Express titles come in a larger case to accommodate the disc and syscard?  These are the things that keep me up at night.   :-k

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Cotton 2 for the Saturn is ever-so-slightly thicker than the normal jewel case.  And when you say "odd-sized", these jewel cases are only like a nanometer or two thicker.  That's it.  Otherwise they're the same size as all other jewel cases.

Quite a few JP saturn titles came in that thicker jewel case.  Just by taking a quick glimpse at my collection, I see Samurai Shodown RPG, Super Robot Taisen F/Final, Lunar MPEG, Lunar Magical School, SFA2, etc. etc.

The thicker jewel case is actually half the thickness of a double case. I can recall a couple of PCE games with such a case: 1552, Alnam no Kiba, Linda Cube, Monster Maker, Princess Maker 2.

I do not approve of the slightly thicker jewel cases because if the case happens to crack or have a hinge break off, it is much harder to find a replacement case cover.

Some games and even regular audio CDs have this slightly-thicker jewel case, usually to accomodate really thick instruction manuals or booklets.

Precisely. I'm too lazy to look now, but in addition to the games Kaminari listed, I recall Wizardry (both of them?), Ziria (SCD version), ummmmm and some game by Right Stuff that I can never remember the title of ...

EDIT: Ooops, the game I couldn't remember was Arunamu No Kiba. Damn, I thought I'd be able to list more titles.

Ziria (SCD version)...

BTW, what the heck IS the difference between the CD and the SCD version of Ziria?

Other folks can provide the definitive answer, but I've been told that NOTHING is actually different. It was simply re-released as a DUO promotion, and since the DUO was all about the new era of SCD games...

Don't quote me on that, though.

I really don't think they would've reprogrammed the game to take advantage of the SCD format. From what I've seen, it looks like its only less compatible and has the SCD warning screen.

Yeah, I hate thick CD cases. They're a terrible idea. I'd rather have a double disc case. You can't fit the thick ones in a CD rack and I've come across many that have broken.

I believe that JP Grandia 2 DC also has one...

Well then I imagine that every single CD-based game ever released in Europe in jewel case form has one of these "extra thick" cases or maybe even something a little thicker since in Europe the instruction manuals must include over 9,546 different languages.  Or maybe the games come in a normal sized case with artwork and the instructions are delivered via a forklift.

Thanks for the answers folks.  Looks like the odd size is a little more common than I had originally thought.  This stupid case won't fit in the drawer with the other games - it must think that it's too good for them.  That extra 1.5 Mega Power really went to his head, so maybe I should let SFII' slap the ACPro around a bit and show him what a full 20 Mega Power looks like.

I want to go on record that I actually like the pudgy jewel cases. I store everything on shelves, so odd-sized items aren't a nuisance. I used to have CD racks with slots.... ouch, that was annoying. I never had enough of the "double-slots".
