Why the f*ck does Bubble Bobble III take up so much space? Isn't it just a high score list?

Thanks.

Yeah XZR probably is Exile.  I'm surprised Working Designs didn't translate the save file name into something like "Poop Squish" or something else amazingly hilarious like that.

XZR is Exile.

Bubble Bobble III's save contains far more than a high score list...it contains a huge list of event switches and variables that are stored for later games. That's how it manages to have such widely varied games in terms of item placement.

Hey I have a question for you guys about Bubble Bobble III.  When I was a kid I did the "reset 99 times" trick to get the necklace, but all I had was a regular Turbo with no save memory.  How the hell did the game keep track of having the power turned off and on 99 times?

That Valis IV trick seems like the best one to see all the saves and how much space they take up!  But I don't own that game(yet)...

Anyway's on US Duo's you could use Order of the Griffon(Chip) to see all the saves also.  I'm not sure but I think you could even erase some of those saves from that screen also-

hmmm, I'll go try it and see if thats the case.

If you're just looking to see/erase individual save files, you can use any System card. Press SELECT at the main screen. The drawback of this method is that it doesn't show you the file sizes, just the filenames.

Because you used reset and not power off. Reset is not the same thing as turning the system off and then on again, there's still data left in the system.

Wow!  A select button with a purpose- NEC knew what they were doing!

Is there a way to see the file sizes AND erase/see the save files?  If I desperately needed to erase something, and had to chose between two save files it would be nice to know how much room I am freeing up with just one save.

Yes, the Valis 4 screen on the previous page will let you as will Cosmic Fantasy Stories 4-2 or something like that.

Seldane no here's the deal though, I didn't have to do it 99 times, the game somehow kept track of how many times a new game was started.  Once I learned about the trick I actually only had to do it like 30 or 40 times since I had already played the hell out of the game for a year or so.  I remember this blowing me away back then because I couldn't figure out how it happened since I knew no turbo chip games had any kind of save memory, but somehow Parasol Stars kept track of how many games had been played on it or something like that.

Parasol Stars is one of those chip games that keep a save file.  But that is strange if you didn't have a CD-ROM or an AV Booster+ attachment like you said above.

Thank you Nat!  I think Steve666 mentioned the existence of this document a year and a half ago when we were talking about the MB128 or something.  I was afraid I'd never see this text.

The link nat posted is interesting if incomplete.  But the FAQ's file sizes definitely seem to skew lower than the actual file size.  The FAQ says Ys takes up something like 45 when in actuality it takes up 61.  I've noticed this on many of his examples.

Also note it states that Parasol Stars doesn't keep any kind of save file.

I thought it might at least be of some interest from a historical standpoint, if nothing else.
