Is my Neo Geo CD bunk?
« on: April 07, 2007, 08:05:30 PM »
I recently bought my first Neo Geo system, the original CD model.

My system is japanese. While waiting for my first original japanese CD games to arrive in the mail, I've tried out a few cdr games made from different quality isos off the internet with varied success.

I found a stack of english Neo Geo CD games at a local store and bought them all to hold me over until I get the titles I really want.

Anyways... some won't start up at all, or get to various stages of progress through the game before crashing altogether. And while they try to load, there is a kind of clicking sound as they spin, like the disc is hitting something as it spins. The sound is a little different with each game.

At least one of these games is scratchless and none are too bad.

The cdr of Kabuki Klash I made loads fine without any weird sounds, but crashes after completing the first match.

Is the Neo Geo CD supposed to be region free? Its weird that its only making noise with original U.S. games I tried so far.

When I received the system it stunk like smoke (not cigarette), and had a greezy film all over it that I had to clean off. It was sold as a 'deal' by a japanese seller on eBay, because one of the controller ports has a small chip of plastic missing.

If the japanese games I've got coming give me any problems, is it safe to conclude that its the system that is the problem?

Even if the seller would consider an exchange or return, the shipping cost more than the system itself.

It will load games from any region. I would assume if it is having problems with alot of original pressed disc I would assume the laser is having probs. You could try adjusting the strength screw on the laser a tad to see if that fixes the problem.

As far as cd-rs go,I have heard they have probs with cd-rs here and there. The CDZ deck is the worse unit for system failure from heat issues. Also keep in mind the games take a long ass time to load sometimes.

Hmm, I never had any problems like that.  The NG CD I used to own(still want to get another) had problems with the games changing from color, to black n' white.  Back n' forth the colors would change.  Wiggling the cable did nothing.  I can only assume something inside was wonky, so I returned it.  This was several years ago now, even had Samurai Showdown 4......I think I sold it though, I wish I hadn't.  I have a bunch of games now, & play them on my pc, but, like I say, I want to find another system one of these days.  If I have the same color problem again, should it be safe to assume it's something internal, if wiggling the cord does nothing??

My Neo CD used to crash frequently until I cleaned the lens, try doing that!

The first thing I tried was a lens cleaner, but after trying the system tonight, it only seems to be getting worse. Like when my Duo RX's lens was on its last legs.

Anyone know the part number of the Neo Geo CD's lens and/or where I can order a replacement?

I dont think there is a replacement to be found, other then buying  anew system off ebay from places like Hit-Japan.Sometimes they offer just the decks without box for pretty cheap.

Unfortunately, thats basically how I got this one.  :(

I just got two japanese Neo CD games in the mail and both won't work. I guess its officially dead now...

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).
