The endless debate...
« on: May 07, 2007, 05:36:14 AM »
Don't turn this into a "who can be the biggest smart@$$" contest pointing out flaws in a hypothetical situation.  Just concentrate on who would win if they ever got to duke it out, to the death!

Tell me why you think so...

Duh, Silverbacks FTMFW!!!  Grizzly bears have yucky, matted, shit brown fur.  Silverback gorillas have black, grey, and white fur.  Any animal with fur resembling the color scheme of Turbo hardware would obviously win.  :)

Of course, grizzly bears weigh between 500 and 1500 pounds while gorillas weigh between 300 and 400 pounds.  So I'm guessing that whichever beast is the hungriest will get the win, but the silverback will need to bring his 'A' game (and a bat).

PS - You bunch of nerds really needed to get laid.  Why didn't you go down to the zoo one night, let some animals loose, and finally settle the debate?

I don't deny my nerd-ness in high school, or even to this day.  However, I did have a highly developed social life in addition to some athletic talent.

Ironically in the college years that followed, being good at mathematics and physical science got me laid way more than my charm or being a 'student' athlete.

Thank god I have my nerd-ness to fall back on.  3 knee surgeries, one rebuilt ankle, and one helluva beer gut later, I'd be selling snow cones in Yellow Knife if I wasn't the least bit intelligent.  STAY IN SCHOOL.

GORILLA.  It has opposable thumbs.  Four of them.  I'd like to see a bear hold a baseball bat.

I'm pretty sure a gorilla would pound any bear to part. Speaking of animal fights, there are some cool ones on YouTube. My favorite is the which results in an amazingly surprising defeat.

I don't understand the question, the poll, the post, the entire thread, the world, what PC Engine is, how I am posting on the internet, or anything else either, for that matter. I'm completely and utterly clueless in every aspect of the universe.

I'm all for the grizzly bear.Adult males weigh around 1000-1500 pounds, and even at that size have a top running speed of 35mph,along with razor sharp 2-4 inch claws, and extremely sharp teeth. The blow for blow swiping speed between the bear and the gorilla would about be even, but it wont matter much because most of the swipes the bear inflicts will cut the gorilla to pieces if the bear means business. The bear not only has the upper hand in weight, but also in standing height. They typically stand at 6 1/2-7 feet.
The adult male silverback only gets to be on average 5 1/2 feet all out standing height, and a top weight of around 400-450 pounds. In a tackling wrestling for dear life deathmatch the bear would easily win. It has all the requirements, the speed, size, and height needed to overpower a silverback gorilla.

You have to remember, bears practice all day long at punching and swiping at enemies. They do so by knocking fish out of the water. That requires a faster movement then the gorilla can trow a punch sometimes. Bears may look fat and slow, but they are very fast and have  a very fast killing swipe. Grizzly bears have been known to take on entire packs of gray wolves for food because they lack fear, desire food more, and have the speed and size needed to do so.

Are Grizzly bear claws sharp?  They are used for digging and are shaped like trowels.  Giant trowels.  Most of the bears mass is designed for digging as bears are foragers, like gorillas.  I've seen Bears pounce on prey or snap at it with powerful jaws, never seen a Bear take a swipe at a salmon if it had sharp claws.  That would be so much easier.

I would crap my pants and turtle like you wouldn't believe if either species (or sub-speices for the Grizzly) got anywhere near me.  My money's on the Gorilla for the sheer fact it can hold two Avenue Pad 6's at the same time!

A grizzly bear of course. As long as it actually chose to fight all out instead of just trying to scare off the gorilla or ran away after getting spooked by the gorilla itself. A grizzly could kill the gorilla in a single swipe.

Yes,their claws are razor sharp. They do dig alot, true, but their claws come out long and curved, and tend to stay sharp regardless.
See the bear beat the wolves. Grizzly Bears rarely lose fights ever.

I deffinitly lean towards the gorrilla, if purely for having greater intelligence then a grizzly bear.  Have there been any studies on said animals, on how smart they are?

Yea,Timothy Treadwell studied grizzlies,he figured out they were smart enough to kill his crazy ass. Both animals are smart in their own right, but they tend to behave very differently because of the survival requirements in their regions of the world. The grizzly because of his tends to have to be a proficient killer because he has to eat alot before the harsh winters set in.

This basically amps up his predator mode into high gear,as the above stupid as hell Timothy Treadwell had learned. The grizzly is a born killer and kills for whatever reason, food,if attacked, whatever, the gorilla will kill if it has to if it is attacked or to get the females and become the head of its group, but it typically is a bluffer and does not kill for food as it is a vegetarian. The bear tends to not bluff,it tends to just kill and eat you if it feels like its worth the effort.

Timothy Treadwell's documentary was hilarious. He just thought he could live with a pack of vicious, hungry bears without any problems at all. I'm still hoping they release the audio that was recorded from the killings.

I think this is a very important poll and if you are ignorant enough to not care, then you shouldn't have even posted.
