The postman wonders about my packages from Asia.
« on: June 21, 2007, 02:16:53 PM »
I felt the need to share, as this led to a bit of laughing yesterday, and moreso at this moment today.

Lately, I've been tracking down certain games, and sometimes for certain PC Engine and Neo Geo games I have to order from Japan, Hong Kong, etc.

Yesterday a package arrives I have to sign for. I'm home, so I go to the door, accept the package, and look it over, I say, "hold on, let me see where this is from". The postman says, "TOKYO! Japan". He puts emphasis on the Tokyo, almost in an accent.

Oh, my postman is of "Asian Descent". 30's or so.

As I'm signing, he asks if he may ask a question about my packages, and that I do not have to answer, it is just him being curious/nosy. I chuckle and tell him to go for it. He mentioens he notices a lot of packages lately from Japan and such, and was curious if I operated my own business.

I laugh, and say no... no... hahhaha These packages are not related to a business.

I ask if he had heard of Neo Geo. He shakes his head and says Yes. I explain that I recently got into the Neo Geo Arcade carts, and that I buy and trade carts with others. This package has a Neo Geo arcade cartridge inside. Cheaper than tracking it down in the US, sometimes. He mentioned somethign about Japan games working in the US, and how that sometimes doesn't work. (Something like that, my memory is a bit foggy). I continue, and explain that the guts of the carts are the same, it is the hardware that determines the language, so I can buy Japan carts and have English Language.

I told him not to worry, it will slow down soon. He laughed, and said it's no problem.

Funny stuff. I mail-order lots of stuff; dental floss, DVD's, VHS, games, books, power tools, etc.

Yeah, quite the nerd I can be...

Hahaha, that's so awesome. The closest story I have to that is ordering something from Japan Game Stock I think and the mailman told my mom that he had no idea what the package was saying since it was all written in Chinese.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Funny story, i've never encounter that when the mailman has me sign for a game from japan.

Most comments i get is "oh your cat is pretty when i sign for a package.

Given how my cat comes to see who it is when i open the front door.

Maybe I should mail you a poorly packaged and slightly leaky box of baby powder - then you can have some really interesting conversations with your mail carrier.  The USPS just loves a good joke.  :)

I hate having to sign for packages.  Basically that means if you have a job you can only accept deliveries on Saturdays.

OK.  I get it.  You think I look like a Baldwin.

Anyway it is a well-known fact that only Alec works, and he only does shitty work.

I have a mail"lady" and she is kinda crazy. She is a skinny lady of asian decent and is seriously hyperactive. She always tells me how I spend to much money when my packages come in. She also buys games from hong kong and japan etc. at least she said she did, haha.

Every time I buy something from Japan with EMS delivery, it's always the same guy delivering it. He's seriously really scary. He ALWAYS shows up really early in the morning (around 6-7 am), and he's really tall and extremely cross (and bug)-eyed! He always freaks me out when he shows up and I can never understand what he says. I love that guy though, as he always brings me the the absolutely best stuff there is (like Falcom and/or Yahoo Japan deliveries and such, hehehe).
