On the subject of people wondering about packages from other countries:

The first time I ordered a package from Japan (from Falcom), my mom got a call from the credit card company asking about it. They must have been worried about identity theft or something.

On the subject of Thomas the Tank Engine (hey, I didn't start this):

I used to love that show when I was a kid. I had a couple videos and I would read the credits. This is how I learned of Ringo Starr, who was the conductor and narrator for a while. So one day, my parents were watching TV, when Ringo Starr appears, and I say excitedly: "Do you know who that is!? He was one of the conductors on Thomas the Tank Engine!"

My parents nearly died laughing at that one.

I've ordered so much stuff from Japan that I finally had my debit card number "stolen" for the first time this year.  It was a little strange and I didn't really determine if it was really stolen or what...but I was getting charged for a few purchases from a clothing store in Tokyo and from the way it was charged, the bank asked me if I was in Tokyo because the person was swiping the card there, in the city.  I got he money back (was only a few hundred bucks) and change my card.  Strange.

Anyway, my wife hates it when I get packages...she always gives me a look like "what did you buy this time??" as I too always order stuff online.  Some weeks I get a package every day....it's like Xmas

Don't ship stuff insured for more than $500 or pay for signature confirmation.  They are supposed to leave the package at your door - unless you live in the hood and your carrier doesn't think that the package would be secure.

Maybe your carrier is just lazy.  I had one once that would take packages for a ride and make no attempt to deliver them.  After three failed delivery 'attempts', the clerk at the post office would write up a package pick up notice, and my postal sloth would stick that in my mail box.  The dumb bitch was too lazy to get out of her vehicle and stick the mail in the door, so if I ever see her on the street, I'll be too lazy to swerve.

Then your carrier is either lazy, thinks that your neighborhood is full of thieves, or you live in an apartment.  Most apartment mailboxes aren't big enough for a package, and they can't leave anything in the hallway that would hinder egress in case of a fire.  Just look on the bright side, you needed to go to the post office and pick up some stamps anyway.

I have the same problem as Cleria. I do live in an apartment building, yes.

The catch for me is that my local city post office will have a line, at any given time of day, at least 35 minutes long. 45-60 minutes long during "rush" hours. So you can see going to the post office is not a positive thing in any way, shape or form. It's something so time consuming I have to request time off work for it.

The difference here is they will actually try to deliver the package to my door before taking it back to the post office. Unfortunately, I work regular business hours M-F so unless my wife happens to be home, guess what? I'm taking half the day off work to go to the post office!

I have to give them a little credit, though. Within the last couple months apparently the post master general has recognized the serious time/wait issue and has started working an extra postal worker during the busy hours who will actually walk down the line and go fetch packages for anyone with a "pink slip." This drastically cuts down my wait to 15-20 minutes, usually. I just wish I could have the 36+ odd hours back of my life I spent waiting in that f*cking line the past x number of years.
