Quick, dumb, Pacland questions
« on: August 08, 2007, 12:04:53 AM »
From about the second stage onwards in Pacland, I notice a flower that suddenly grows on the ground at certain moments, especially when you are taking the level slowly. But what is its purpose? It can't be picked up for points, so what does it do, if anything at all?

Also, can you select any stage after 5 on the Japanese version using a cheat mode? Gamefaqs mentions something but doesn't explain properly how to do it.

Dude, we're not supposed to discuss things openly! Cease and desist, immediately.

I know you can in the US version.

Let me go find the code and get back to you. I seem to remember it involes pressing UP on the D-pad 100 times.

There are actually two games on the cart, "Pac-Land" and "Pac-Land PRO". The cheat code will also allow you to play the second game without first winning Pac-Land. Although you shouldn't have any problem beating Pac-Lad; the game is as easy as they come.

Codes shown below taken from the PC Engine Catalog Project.  Your mileage may vary.

Quote
Level Select,Sound Test & Extra Lives: At the title screen hold I+II, press RUNx2 to get options. Release. Press RUN to get to sound test. Press RUN to get to title screen. Press RUN to get "SKIP 1". Use I and II to choose level. Press RUN to start game.

Pro Select: During stage select (SKIP, above), press Ux10. Equivalent to finishing level 32 and starting harder set.

No Hit Mode: During stage select (SKIP, above) press Dx100. Gives invulnerability.

Bald Pac-Man: When you reach the end of any round where the "Break Time" sign stands, reset the game as soon as Pac-Man's hat flies into the air. Start new game, pacman's hat will hover in the air.

Stage Select: To get to any level after you are in the mode select, turn "skip" on. When you start game, can select where to go.

Last Level Hint: It may seem impossible but if you for the most part hover near the lake surface not a single ghost will make contact.

I've just tried this and indeed it works. The Pacland Pro mode is good too - really cranking up the speed. This breathes new life into the game - thanks very much for the tips  :)

It turns into a real beeyotch towards the end though (or maybe I just suck).  Have fun and let us know if you can beat it sans invulnerability.

Pac-Land PRO is really challenging. Much much MUCH more so than Pac-Land is.

It's beatable (I've done it) but a lot tougher.

Can you actually beat it with just three lives? The whole 32 levels??

Don't you start with four lives?

I can one-credit Pac-Land no problem on a good day.

As for PRO, I'm pretty sure I did when I was younger. I probably couldn't do it now if I sat down right this minute with it. I surely wouldn't have any problem with it if I used a Continue or two. I got the game as a birthday gift right after it came out for the TG-16 and it was only one of three TG games I owned at that time (the other two being Keith Courage and Space Harrier). I had already beaten Keith Courage so I spent a lot of time with Space HArrier and Pac-Land. After I beat Pac-Land I called the TurboGrafx hint line and acquired the level select code so I could skip straight to PRO and practice whenever I wanted. The key (with both games) is to get as many as points as possible as quickly as possible to build up your extra life reserve. There are a lot of tricks that, if used in the right places, can score you some big points.

You start with five lives, which show as four pacman symbols representing the ones that are spare. You can change the amount of lives in the special mode to just three, which is much better.

By the way, how well did you do in Space Harrier? I can get 10,000,000 odds right now.

Not sure what my highest-ever score was... I can clear the game no problem on one credit in "Normal" mode and on "Hard" mode I can usually clear it on one credit. But projectiles come at you a LOT faster on Hard so some of the later bosses like those blue cyber-peanuts can be tough to pass without dying.

If I have time this week I'll play through on Hard and snap a shot of my score when I finish... My guess is 20,000,000+.
