Cheap thrills
« on: August 19, 2007, 01:12:13 PM »
So... being that I'm new to the PC Engine scene... which games offer more bang for the buck?

This could lead to another "Top ten" blah blah blah topic... but perhaps it won't.

Mainly I was looking to see which game did you buy for little money... but then found out that the actual gameplay is awesome?  Give me a few of your favorites... in both the Hu card and CD formats.

No, this is a good topic because lots of Top 10 games command a high price (i.e. Air Zonk, Dracula X, Dungeon Explorer II, Spriggan, Nexzr, etc. etc.)

We need to know if you can play either North American or Japanese HuCards. Or both.

Indeed, there are many games that are worth buying for the soundtrack alone.

one of the be(a)st soundtrack ever. tim wright did an excellent job on that one. superior to any other versions, doubtless. alltough the Amiga version is graphically wise superior.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Oh Shape Shifter is another fantastic choice. That game can be dirt cheap and is one helluva an adventure.

Sorry... I forgot to give you an idea on what I can play.  I just got a PC Engine Duo-r from D-Lite (Haven't played it much though... been busy at work).  So I can play just about anything!

Gate of Thunder 4-in-1
Dungeon Explorer
Dungeon Explorer II PCE

I got a question on these....

First... what's this 4-in-1 Gate of Thunder?

Second.... If I play through the Dungeon Explorer on the US Hu Card... Would it be safe to say the actions (gameplay) will be basically the same for the PCE counterpart?

I have collected Hu Cards for the most part.  I only have 3 cd based games, so I don't know much about the cd based stuff.  Yet.

The Turbo version of Gate of Thunder also has Bonk's Adventure, Bonk's Revenge and Bomberman on it. Its not really cheap, but its a great value.

Dungeon Explorer is basically the same, other than the text, which you don't really need to read to complete the game. You might want to start the game once on an emulator to figure out how to start a game or use a password.

I see... I thought the 4-in-1 was a hu card.

LOL  I love those Hu Cards... one day I'll migrate to the cd side... but I love those little plastic cards!

How many Hu cards are out there on the PC Engine side?
