I think the real question is why did we get Super Bomberman instead of a SNES port of this?

You know, it sounds like we're slamming this game, but to be completely honest, I DO like it. It may mot have the prettiest graphics or the best music, but it's still a fun fully functional Bomberman game.

Well Hudson very rarely ports Bomberman games, they just make new ones for every system. The reason why this is a port (rather than an original title), I assume, is because the Megadrive was virtually dead in Japan when it came out, so they just got cheap and ported a PCE game and hoped that people elsewhere in the world would buy it since there was no release of B-Man '94 outside of Japan anyway.

I must say, IMO its a top 5 Mega Drive game...even though it sucks compared to the PCE version.

The rom I have is titled (W), so I assume that it was made with Europe and North America in mind.

Hudson also never supported the Megadrive(J) and only dropped a few ports and a new Dungeon Explorer on the Genesis/MD(EU) at the last minute. If the Lords of Thunder and Cobra ports weren't so good, you could argue that they didn't know how to develop Genesis games.

But just because they could've done a better job with the color and music doesn't mean that its not still a good looking PCE style Bomberman game. I still like the style way better than the Super Bombermen.

The Genesis version seems to believe that nearly all Bomberman should be white. Racism?

They must really hate the blue Bomberman, for they deleted him from the title screen.  I guess it would've raised too many questions if they'd left him in, since only four people could play, but that could've been down right funny.  I can hear it now: "Hey, is that an unlockable character?" - "Damn straight, just press up, right, down, left, II at the title screen.  What?  You don't have a button II?  Tough shit."

I agree, Mega Bomberman was a quick, half-baked port that could've looked a little better (it's still fun, though).  The oddest looking thing for me is the half a block shift on the screen, as it just looks weird cutting off the top of the field and is too close to the status bar.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

It would've been nice to have kept 5 player matches with the option of having a 5th AI player.

The Genesis version should have been a Camerica J-Cart with 4 controller ports built in to the cart itself and also compatible with both 4-player adapter thingies for 8 player action.  But wait!  The game should have come with a male/female DB9 adapter so that you could use the modem port on the Genesis 1 for an additional player for a grand total of 9 player action.  Also while they're at it, they should have thrown in an SVP chip... just because.

At least the Saturn version lets you hook up two taps to get 10-player going.
