I also like Shape Shifter, but it doesn't really fit in with the LA series.

I always put Shape Shifter in the same group with Shadow of the Beast.

Which I love too!

The questing elements are reminiscent of Shadow of the Beast, but thematically, it has a lot in common with Axe (barbarian fellow grabs an axe and journeys through jungles and caves, fighting giant spiders and whatnot).  It's sort of like Simon's Quest to the first Axe's Castlevania.  In a lot of ways, it's more similar to Axe than is the game that they actually chose to dub "Axe II" here.

the original.

since we're on the subject of Legendary Axe,  I'm reposting this from a thread I made last year:

Quote
do any of you remember the U.S. television commercial for Legendary Axe?
I remember seeing it in late 1989 / early 1990.

it was NOT the same commercial that introduced the TG16 which did show some footage of Legendary Axe, but was not mainly about that game (that commercial is already on the internet  and linked to  below)

what I remember of the U.S. Legendary Axe commercial:

-two guys in their livingroom/den playing Legendary Axe
-part of the gameplay showed the scene where you have to avoid the two boulders.  one of the guys says "go back! go back"
-i think the guy who is playing, jumps onto the rope
-there is a dog in commercial, maybe a Dalmation?
-IIRC one of the guys has a sandwich which he drops on the floor.
-maybe the dog gets it.  the dog definitally rolls over towards the end of the ad.

the two guys in the Legendary Axe commercial may, or may not have been the same two guys in THIS U.S. TG16 commercial that introduced the console and gaming including Keith Courage and the CD-ROM
http://www.gaming-age.com/specials/adspecial2/Commercials/Other/turbografx.mpg

if anyone has the U.S.  Legendary Axe commercial with the dog, I would very much like to see it.   would be much appreciated.

i've already checked for it on:

* gameads.gamepressure.com
* gaming-age
* youtube
* turbotv_ad_archive.html on this website
and elsewhere, without any luck.

still haven't found it.

I still haven't came across it either and I would still love to see this as well (and any other TG16 commercials I haven't seen - we should compile a list of them sometime).

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

I liked the first game because it actually had something to do with an AXE.  The second game, while it was fun, and for the record, DID allow you to get an axe, wasn't centered around it.  Besides, the first game had a nice colorful jungle atmosphere with awesome tribal music and the axe power meter was a nice touch.  The second game did have a power meter but seemed too shortcoming since you could max it with a few powerups rather than powering up your weapon a little bit each more by the level.  Finally, the final level in Legendary Axe II was a total bitch to complete.  The tractor beams pissed me off to no end. :evil: I'd take the temple maze anyday in LEI than the f*cking spaceship(?) in LEII.

Sorry, but I don't see your library card on the books of Ys.  Now, RETURN THEM TO ME!!!

I could have sworn I've beaten the game and I don't remember any tractor beams anywhere.

Yeah, there are tractor beams in the final level of LA II. They aren't *that* bad, but they sure are annoying.

Haha, I find it funny that there are tractor beams in a game like that.

I'm sticking to the first one. Part 2 is in name only,really has nothing to do with Legendary Axe and I found it alot less interesting.

Tractor beams, but not a single tractor.  Weird, eh?

"Legendary Tractor" would be a sweet title for a game.  I'm not sure what the storyline would entail, but it would have nothing to do with actual tractors.

It would be an early racing combat game. You all drive tractors outfitted with chariot-style weapons. You can shoot arrows, ram, side-swipe... Destruction derby with tractors and ancient tools of war.

Count me in Spenoza.  The only things that it's missing are gratuitous nudity and chainsaws.

A massive combine style tractor could be a hidden vehicle. The true "legendary tractor", if you will.

That sounds amazing.
