Lords of the Rising Sun

Anybody here played this game? What are your impressions of it?

  I enjoy it a lot, it's probably my favourite strategy game on the Turbo.

  It can get a bit repetitive, but the feudal Japan setting really appeals to me.  Usually games like this are only available in Japanese, which makes it
  somewhat unique. 

  It can be found for quite cheap, so if you enjoy strategy games, it's probably worth acquiring.

The game kicks much ass. But don't bother playing it if you don't have a lot of patience.

You get to pick one of three campaigns to play. Each has a unique ending and intro.

The map plays out similar to Draon Force(from what I understand) with you moving generals along paths to different locations. During battles, you give out general commands as the troops slowly wade into each other. If you win, you have to chase down the general on horseback sidescrolling style and sword him to death.

If you invade a castle, you have to find your way through a large maze before sundown in an overhead perspective kinda like Ikari Warriors, dodging enemies along the way.

If your castle is being invaded, you have to shoot down enemies with arrows Shinobi bonus stage style. You can also send assassins to kill generals in their sleep. If you wake up to ninja in the middle of the night, you fight them in a first person perspective similar to the archer minigame, but instead you block throwing stars with your sword and strike when they leap in front of you.

Overall the graphics are well done for this type of game and its loaded with nice sampled sfx. The english version has one of the best bad dubs around. My friends and I still use some of the games phrases to this day(I bought it when it first came out). :P

Oh yeah, I hate strategy/war sims, but I love this game. :)

Well, that's quite a vote of confidence. I asked about the game because I'm helping to compile a list of "Hidden Gems" for Racketboy's site for the TG-16. So I'm trying to target those US games that were actually pretty good but maybe didn't get all the attention they deserved. Not that that's relative, because on an absolute level the entire catalog of games is "hidden". So I'm dealing with comparative attention and quality within the game base. I've got a short but fun list so far.

I've had this game for years (and wanted to play it for years before I owned it), but I haven't put the effort into learning it better yet, even though it's a game I really want to play through sometime as it looks pretty awesome. Same goes with Vasteel.

Vasteel is very easy to get into. Although Lords' is worth it, its a big commitment.

After Black Tiger's glowing review, I have to add LotRS to my list.  It sounds much more interesting than any other description made it out to be.

Vasteel is very easy to get into. Although Lords' is worth it, its a big commitment.

That might be a problem for me, since I can't get into Vasteel much at all.

Lords of the Rising Sun is ain interesting pseudo-strategy game... It's kind of a strategy game for people who usually hate strategy games.

To me the gameplay is rather clunky, particularly the arrow defense sequence that you do when your castle is attacked. I really prefer the KOEI strategy games, which are also available for the Turbo, but only in Japanese. The KOEI games also use a heavy amount of Kanji characters, making the language barrier quite difficult.

Lord of the Rising Sun is different than the KOEI games, which is why I've kept it for so long. (I've owned it as long as I've owned my Duo), but like Keranu, I've had it shelved for a long time. In my case, it's because I'm still exploring other Turbo games that are easier to get into.

Wonderful game, I've beaten all 3 scenerios several times.  One of these days, I'd like to try the Amiga & CD-I versions as well.

Though it seems to have a very steep learning curve, I want to learn how to play it and not suck.  Any tips or strategies?  Is one scenario an easier than the others?

I haven't played through in years, but I believe that the youngest character is the easiest. Try to notice patterns in maze layouts when storming castles. There are ways that are more successful for typical battles, I believe that you should send you troops out so that they form sort of a < pattern and then let the enemy funnel into your army. The general chasing horse riding sections are also easy once you master them, but I don't remember the specifics, but i think you need to dodge obstacles more than anything. The trick to efficiently stopping an invasion is to shoot where the troops are going to be and get a feel for the timing. Aiming so that you get them just as they come over or down a wall works best (I think). It's hard to get used to defending against ninjas, since it rarely happens, but you should get the hang of it after a few times (just save constantly!). I also remember setting up enemies on the map, dancing back and forth, maybe for a pincer attack(?).

Yes, the 3 scenario's deffinitely differ in diffuculty.  Yoshitsune is the hardest, Yoritomo is medium, & Kiyomori(I think that was his name) is easy.  I'm not big into these type of games, but I got absorbed in this one, so, my skills on these type of games aren't noteworthy.  


IIRC, one standard strategy I would use in the battles, is to have the archer's on auto fire, & then I'd have 1 or 2 groups of soldiers move out into the field to lure the enemy towards me, & then head back to my spot with the rest of the army, with the enemy getting blasted by my archer's, & destroyed by my soldier's.

Heh, one of my friends bitd, was so into this game, that he played it, even though I didn't have enough room in memory to save my game.  So he played it all nite.  I remember falling asleep around 11 or 12, & woke back up around 6 & he was still playing!!  Ah memories!

Edit-Ah, BT got to it before me.  I think on the castle's you really just need to get used to the layout, though, it might be that castle layout's are effected by the number of enemy soldiers?  I don't recall for sure.  The ninja's, like BT said, it rarely happens, but you do get the hang ot it, & yes, save often!  And timing is important on the the invasion's, I basically would time it so that an enemy would pop his head over a wall, just as the arrow hits that spot.  It's funny, the horseback stuff I used to have no problem with, but I recall bitd having a hard time killing that leader.  I have no real suggestions, other then avoiding rocks & tree's n' stuff so your horse doesn't go apespit on ya.

I liked this game a lot when I last played through it(which was ummmm probably 15 years ago). Anyways, to me it felt like a strategy game mixed with an action adventure being that you actually controlled the troops/main character. Unlike Military Madness wear you just sit back and watch all the battles.

Interesting timing! I just got this in the mail today. I played it, it seemed fun, but really really slow paced. I can't figure out how to get more generals/armies, so I just moved around from one place to another until I got my ass handed to me.
