RED - Who are they?
« on: October 22, 2007, 10:36:27 AM »
RED... A name we know well. Bonk, Gate of Thunder, Sakura Taisen... Who are these developers? I can hardly find out anything about them. What are their ties with other companies? Does someone else own them these days? Just what's going on?

Anyone have information to add about RED? I know very little, but I'd like this thread to become something of an "All Things RED" thread.

The following links should answer your questions, spenoza:

http://www.red-entertainment.co.jp/eng/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Entertainment

I suggest you visit their website first, as it has some fascinating historical facts about them and their history. (Click on the "About RED" button to get more options on viewing their history.) You asked if someone else owns them, and the answer is technically no, although they are part of the SEGA Group.

They're the greatest video game developer of all time.

They make the Tengai Makyou/Far East Of Eden series. Recent releases include Namida for PS2, The Apocalypse IV for PSP, Manjimaru for DS and Ziria for 360.

They also did Sakura Wars, which is a pretty great series. The third game being on of my favorite games ever. The new ones (PS2) look shite though. The death of the Dreamcast just sucked the wind out of Sega's sails something terrible...

I believe they also did the best horizontal shoot'em up in the 16-bit era combined with the best red book audio tracks people on earth ever could hear.

Great find, Nat.  That's some very interesting info about the company, actually.  Looks like they do character design and animation for games.  Cool!

yeah..nice links there. just a big shame, that their best games are not listed or even mentioned something about it, in both of them.

The WP entry is almost, but not quite, worthless. It notes that they were involved with Sakura Taisen and then don't even mention the games under the Sega Saturn section below.

I've known RED's games for a long time, but nothing about THEM.

Did either of you actually go to their website?

If you click the "About RED" link, that opens a second page with general statistics on the company. On this page, there are now a few options on the left you can click on to see more in-depth details, including a timeline of the company's growth.

I'm not sure what more you want to know about them. Are you looking for information on their founder's mother's maiden name? Curious about their lead programmer's bowel movement regularity, perhaps?

Seriously, their site tells just about everything I could possibly want to know about them. The only thing missing, as has already been pointed out, is a complete list of all games they have had involvement in.

I didn't look at it.  45 employees was a lucky guess.

There's some stuff there, but I would really have liked more info about their Hudson days. And yes, a games list would have been nice, too. They just don't seem to be the company they used to be.
