console warz
« on: October 24, 2007, 12:03:26 PM »
guyjin's signature got me wondering... AFAIK, the Wii has been in the lead of the current generation of consoles for at least a month or two now. I even thought some kind of official announcement was made when the Wii overtook the 360 a number of weeks ago. But his signature shows the XBOX 360 as the leader. Where do those numbers come from, guyjin?

This is the site I visit for current information on console and games sales:

Supposedly that VC Chartz site is flawed, but I don't really know much about the details. I do know that the 360 sold the most consoles last month because of the release of Halo 3, but not sure if they are in the lead of total now.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Flawed? In what way?

From what I understand, they take numbers from actual numbers of consoles/games sold worldwide as opposed to how many shipped.

The console sales numbers you see on the front page of NexGen Wars are estimates, and are not intended to represent exact, down to the minute sales as only Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony know the exact sales figures of their respective consoles. What we do here at NexGen Wars is compile numbers from NPD, Media Create, ChartTrack, as well as various other sources. We then take these numbers and, based on past sales trends, extrapolate the numbers out to give as close to real-time estimates as possible.

so they're an estimate. a good one, but still an estimate. This is why the numbers will sometimes fall steeply after having gone up a while.

Incidentally, vgchartz seems to be down.

Look at how low the PS3's sales are - just under 5,000,000.  I bet that the sales would be a lot closer if Sony would quit shipping the PS2 (and bring out some top notch exclusives, obviously).

the people buying ps2's now are the budget minded parents, and poor gamers... they wouldn't even think of buying a ps3.

I don't think it's a stretch to say ps2 sales are not hurting the ps3 at all.

I would rather buy a PS2 than a PS3 simply because the PS2 actually has some good exclusive games?

It seems like the PS3 has nothing but old Xbox 360 games on it.  :?

I disagree, guyjin.  I think that quite a few Sony fans would step up to a PS3 if they weren't still cranking out games for the PS2, or if they couldn't replace a dead PS2 with a new one and keep playing their existing library of games.

Yeah, that's odd. They've never been down before as far as I know, and they were up when I posted the link.  :?:

So I guess that the VG Chartz numbers must be an estimate of some sort as well, but when the race is so close, for one site to list one console in the lead and another site listing the other, it just seems odd to me.

Until I saw your signature I thought it was common knowledge that the Wii was mopping the floor with the 360 (especially considering the 360 had a full year on the Wii). Like I said, I thought there was even some kind of official announcement made recently when the Wii finally pulled ahead. But maybe I'm wrong.

I'm still interested to hear where Keranu heard that the VG Chartz site is "flawed." I've always visited them for all my console-race needs!

It's interesting how people who buy the 360 actually purchase games for it instead of just letting it collect dust between mario kart and smash brothers games.

I was trying to find a YouTube video describing it that I saw months ago, but I can't seem to find it so far.

Same deal with the PS3. I think that people desperate to get some use out of the device they dropped a ton of money on is drivng bluray movie sales way more than if the PS3 had some killer game apps. Its a bluray movie player that throws in game playing as a bonus, not the other way around right now.

I'm actually considering getting one as a movie player that may someday play a game I want. They just dropped the Canadian msrp to the U.S. number.
