Yeah this thing looks badass, I posted a link for it before on another thread. What's really interesting was that this machine was originally going to use CEDs!

laser disk was bad ass  8) Imagine how much data you could fit on a dual layer blue ray laser disk  :-k probably like a terrabyte or something,  :lol:

I would say probably 100TB. The physical area of a 12" disc is enormous.

The bigger the better too! A small inch scratch on a laserdisc is nothing, a small inch scratch on CD is brutal. ;)

From what I understand, it sorta was. They had numerous albums released on 5 inch "CD Video".

The CD was derived from the Laserdisc, but specifically designed to be a portable music format. They came out around the same time, and both were made by the same people, so there was no reason for the laserdisc manufacturers to make a music-only laserdisc.

Also, the first laserdiscs actually had analog audio. They didn't adopt digital, CD style audio until later.

Was it magnetic tape-based audio or analog optical audio like in the Optigan?

I don't really know about the technical stuff, but from what I understand there were "grooves" formed on the disc that the laser would pick up and read, kinda like a record.

I'm shocked. LaserDiscs were invented long before I ever imagined. When I was a kid in the 80's I remember they were getting semi-popular as the rich-man's home video medium. I guess I always assumed they were invented around that time (early '80s).

According to Wikipedia, the first LaserDisc was created in 1958. I didn't even know they had lasers in 1958.

I remember when my uncle got a LaserDisc player... My family didn't even have a VCR yet; too expensive, and the battle between VHS and Betamax was raging. He also had a six-foot bigscreen projector TV. Every time we went over there we always watched movies since he basically had a theatre in his house and the biggest movie library known to man. Nowadays this setup wouldn't be half as impressive as it was back then.
