read the wikipedia entry on laserdiscs, that explains it better than i ever could.

I'm shocked. LaserDiscs were invented long before I ever imagined. When I was a kid in the 80's I remember they were getting semi-popular as the rich-man's home video medium. I guess I always assumed they were invented around that time (early '80s).

According to Wikipedia, the first LaserDisc was created in 1958. I didn't even know they had lasers in 1958.
Yeah LaserDisc is truly remarkable and revolutionary. I really think the technology was given to us by aliens or something.

I remember when my uncle got a LaserDisc player... My family didn't even have a VCR yet; too expensive, and the battle between VHS and Betamax was raging. He also had a six-foot bigscreen projector TV. Every time we went over there we always watched movies since he basically had a theatre in his house and the biggest movie library known to man. Nowadays this setup wouldn't be half as impressive as it was back then.
Actually that set-up sounds way cooler to me than the set-ups in this crappy millenium. I'd so rather watch LDs on a 6 foot projector TV than DVDs on some blurry LCD TV. My grandparents had a cool big screen Zenith TV like that, but unfortunately no LD player (though they did have a huge old skool satellite dish in their background that we would climb up on). I posted about it before and how I would play Genesis games like Taz on it.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

I used to have  a massive LD collection and 9-10 players a couple of years back. I still have 2 players, and some movies, like my precious copy of Ed Wood.  BTW,where did Stevek666 go?
