Unless the theater has side masking that can come in far enough for 4:3 (99.9% of theaters don't), you'll be seeing empty screen space.

haha. You just don't want us to enjoy this.  :P

Yeah, no kidding. Jeez, Joe! I honestly had no hang-ups about any of this, but he's almost convinced me I'm going to have a sub-par experience.

Um...

I don't know about you, but I've seen shitloads of 4:3 movies in theaters. There was such a thing as film before Panavision, you know. I assume that pro grade video projectors have matted fixtures, just as pro grade film projectors do, although I have no experience with them.

Anyway, the curtains should only be as wide as the image, and I'm pretty sure even that is electronically controlled these days.

I'm not a fan of the state of theaters these days at all, and I pretty much hate digital projection outside of the home/school/office, but this is a non-issue.

Not at all, I'm just correcting comments that are possibly in error.  Also, wouldn't you rather go in with low expectations and be surprised than go in with high expectations and be disappointed?

Most films these days are not shot in Panavision.  Many are shot in Super35 but enough about all of that nonsense.  If the theater has curtains, then good.  That's what I did when I showed movies in 1.33, but curtains cannot substitute 100% for masking.  If you try to use them that way, part of the image shows up on the curtains ever-so-slightly.  There should be some masking involved and the curtains should be right outside of that.  However most theaters don't have curtains.

When it comes to theatre experiences I've learned long ago to arrive with low expectations. heh.  ](*,)

Except for enjoying the FPS games and the arcade light-gun game, and laughing at that movie scene where Spock makes transparent alunimum, I've never liked Star Trek, it's really really boring.

One of my favorite things to do is make the "Live Long and Prosper" sign while saying "May the Force be with you".

The looks on the respective fanboy's faces are priceless.

Not all Star Trek is really boring. A lot of the recent TV shows have been shit, but the movies (and most of the original series) are masterpieces 9 times out of 10.

You probably watched some Voyager or last-season Next Generation episodes and turned the channel out of boredom. I don't blame you... But even within the "Star Trek" realm itself, the stuff is all very very different depending on when it was produced and who wrote it. A lot of the 80's stuff had more action elements, while a great majority of the stuff produced in the 90's and this century was soap-opera-in-space type crap.

I personally liked The Next Generation for the most part, but by the 7th season it seemed like everyone was sleepwalking through their parts and it just got real boring. TNG peaked, IMO during season 2 and/or 3. It was like the original series on steroids, and the stories were all relatively fast-paced and interesting. There are probably only like 1 or 2 bad episodes to show for both those years combined.

And BTW, it was Scotty who created the transparent aluminum. He tried to give the formula to a Mac Plus by talking to the mouse. Good times.

EXACTLY! Is the original series as boring as the 90's one? The 80's sounds cool, but what about the 60's/70's one?

That's how much I know about the series.  And this has NEVER been more appropriate.

The original series had some soap opera-y moments, but it wasn't all like that. There was a lot of really good stuff. The original series was the best series, IMO. I find William Shatner entertaining to watch, regardless of what he's doing.

Go watch Star Trek II and tell me you don't like Star Trek. Everybody likes Star Trek II. Aliens that enter your body through your ears and feed off your brain tissue, crazy psychopaths murdering space station crews, intense ship battles... Good stuff.

Not at all. Not even close, actually. You just need to see it.

Really? Hmm. To each their own, but those bugs have always freaked me out. Anyway, I have no objectivity on this subject.....look at my name.  :P

THIS is Ceta Alpha V!!!!!!

Yeah, Kitsunexus is crazy. Those effects were excellent for the time period, and they still hold up pretty well today. Definitely better than the generic CGI crap studios use nowadays. You want to talk about cheesy, eh?

My sentiments exactly.  What amazes me most about Star Trek is how many people recognize the cast for their work on the first series, even though it only ran for seventy some episodes.  The movies certainly helped cement the actors in peoples brains, but it seems that everyone remembers the cheesy sets and sometimes goofy dialog of the television show, yet they can't recall much about the movies.  The one line I usually hear is "Is that the one with the whales?".
