Are Hu-Card lots a good way to go?
« on: November 09, 2007, 08:32:22 AM »
I was wondering,  in terms of buidling a Hu-card collection, is it better to buy hucards loose in "Lots" off ebay, or purchase each game one by one?  What are you opinions on this?  I guess what im asking is, can you score some good deals going the lot route or what?

Yes. You can get a lot of games that way for not a lot of money.

However, since the really great stuff can get more money by being sold alone, don't set your expectations too high.

Lots are your best bet to get some pretty cheap games as a per unit cost (and save on shipping), but you can get stuck with a bunch of duplicates or unwanted games.

Lots are the way to go if you don't mind taking the time to sell off the crap and doubles.
I put the stuff on Craigslist. There is rarely PCE/TG stuff on there, so most of it goes fast, the rest I put on Ebay in groups of 2-3 of similar games.

I bought a couple lots when I first started collecting , sure..   but let me tell you this

- the games you get will be BEAT UP.  Especially cases, booklets.   BEAT UP.

- you're not going to find any rare games in there.  Not a single one. If there is a rare game in a lot, you can bet the lot will be bid up to atleast the value of that rare game (hey, if it's a lot of 15 games that's OK,  but if it's 4 and the rest are Keith Courage / Bonk, you aren't doing so good)

- sometimes it seems like there is a lot more competetion on Ebay for lots over loose (even complete) games.   case in point:  I won Parasol Stars, complete in case and in perfect condition for $10 the other day.  no one else bid?? Couldnt believe it.   A week before a lot that had PS + a couple no big deal games sold for $40+.

I guess those are all the caveats.  In general it's a fine strategy as long as you can put the extra work into it and you aren't expecting any miracles.

I bought a few lots early on but I no longer do because I wind up with doubles.  I have doubles of airzonk, motoroader and the greatest turbo game ever- tv sports football.  Sarcasm included.  Also a gradius double that's worthless because it doesn't work- I used an eraser on it and all that mess- just doesn't play right.  had to get another.  Maybe I'll make my useless defective gradius double into something decorative.  Drill a hole into it and hang it on my tiny desktop christmas tree so everyone could marvel at how geeky I get.  Or how much I rock.  Or something.
