Haha. I'm one of those people. Well I can get up over 200kbps, but yeah, I know Demonoid was super quick. A friend of mine gets over 500kbps.

Hmmm....sorry. I guess it's the kbps (PER SECOND) that confused me. I've been obsessing lately over improving my download speeds.   

But yeah, 128 is not acceptable though I really haven't had a problem finding good quality files outside of Demonoid. 

Anyway, if I really want good quality music or video I'll buy the damn product. I'm not against downloading at all, but if I like a band I've downloaded or a particular album I'll buy it. The music industry is full of shit when they say they're losing money from people downloading. As if I would've bought all the music I've downloaded.  When I was a kid there was no internet but we did have blank cassettes. I would generally buy certain CDs/LPs/TAPES that my friends didn't have and vice versa. We would tape the ones we didn't have or if we really liked a certain album we'd buy it for ourselves.

Yeah, that's about how it went for me. Except I rented tapes & CDs from the library and then dubbed them onto blank tapes if I liked 'em. I had a massive collection of music on recordable cassettes at one point.

I won't deny that most music released since 2000 sucks, but no more so than it did before 2000.  The quality of the music is irrelevant; people are listening to more and more music but are paying for less and less.

Music sucks 90% more now than it did in the first part of the '90s and before. Music has been on a steep and steady decline since 1995 or so. The music industry in 2007 consists mainly of a bunch of lameasses with gold teeth making up words and spouting shit that doesn't even make sense about clubs and bitches.

My point is that it's no wonder less people are buying music today than ten years ago. It's all crap. But people still listen to it because that's what's "popular." They aren't motivated to buy it because next week something else will be "mad dope." How many CDs have you bought that were produced in the 90's and earlier? How many CDs do you own that were produced since 2000? In the last 7 years I can probably count on my two hands how many CDs I've bought. In the 90's I bought literally hundreds.

I will buy an album if I think it's worth the money and I want to support the artist. Despite the availability of illegal downloads online, I think the majority of the population feels the same way I do. You want to encourage your favorite artists to continue to produce good music so you pay the asking price for their album. During the grunge and alt rock era one of my favorite things to do was go to the local CD store and see what kind of cool imports or obscure records I could pick up.

While there's no denying illegal downloading of songs has a small impact on record sales, if everyone's ability to download said songs suddenly disappeared I don't think you'd see much of a spike in record sales. Put simply, 90% of the music out today just isn't worth the money.
