Any Review of Takeda Shingen?
« on: November 29, 2007, 01:30:20 AM »
T'was wondering how this is.  Looks like a mindless beat 'em up and I'm not expecting much from a two meg Aicom cart- but I haven't seen any reviews of it.  From the looks of it it should've been a two-player game though.

That would've been nice if it was 2 players.  The game starts out kind of simple, but IIRC, you get more attacks as you level up.  I kinda like it, but, I wouldn't pay too much for it.  Maybe $5.

The leveling up concept is cool and all, but this game is a bastard! You only get one life, not continues or anything and I think life bar refills are rare. It's also kind of cool how your swords clash in the game, but the gameplay is pretty stiff and it's not a pretty game to look at either.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Hmmm.  Perhaps I'll put this puppy on the back end of my wish list.

It gets some points if you're into Samurai culture... there aren't too many old school action games like this...

But the gameplay is pretty clunky. I played around with it for a while when I first got it but it's been shelved and isn't really calling too loudly for me to start playing it again.

You only get one life, not continues or anything

You can continue, but the way to do it isn't obvious.  When you're sent back to the title screen after dying, hold down button I and press Down on the d-pad.

Note that you can't continue if you lose to the second "form" of the fourth boss.

I see that I'll have to write a review and defend this great game's honor.   :)

Thanks a lot for the tip! That should definitely make me more interested in playing farther into the game! Was this continue "trick" mentioned in the instruction manual (like J.J. and Jeff)?

I don't know; I haven't looked at the manual yet.   :)

When I was sent back to the title screen for the first time, I smashed a bunch of buttons, and lo and behold, I was able to continue.  So I figured out what the exact combo was the next time, haha.

Wow, impressive! I checked the instruction manual just now and I can't find anywhere that would indicate that. Good thing you figured that out! I might have to load it up tonight.

Wow, I pretty much have all of the U.S. Duo and TurboGrafx games but I've never heard of Takeda Shingen.  In fact, there have been a lot of "NEC TG-16/TE/TurboDuo" games discussed lately that I've never heard of:  Dracula X, Kaze Kiri, Last Armageddon...I've never heard of any of these U.S. games.  They must be ultra rare!
Tell me, do they bear any resemblance to the PCE titles of the same name that I've seen discussed over in that wacky ethnic forum where the import freaks hang out?

Great point! I fixed the problem! :D

I played some more of this game earlier tonight to level three I think and I got to say that I enjoyed it a lot more after that! The complaints I posted earlier in this thread are healed as you progress in the game. When you level up, you're given new abilities like a jump attack and a stab move and this makes the combat much nicer! Also I found the levels after the first one to look cooler too and I wasn't aware that there was a shop you could visit at the end of each stage. When I died at level three, I was too lazy to look up Runin's secret continue code, so I just button mash myself but I guess I wasn't as lucky as him. I definitely plan on playing more of this game.
