Cosmic Fantasy 2 - bizarre bugs
« on: November 30, 2007, 08:36:46 AM »
OK, this topic has likely already been discussed here previously, but I'll be darned if I've ever been able to successfully search a forum for old topics and find anything useful.

My memories of Cosmic Fantasy 2 were that lots of things in the game didn't work right. There were antidotes and potions to cure being turned to stone but I was never once poisoned or turned to stone. And lots of the spells that supposedly did other things really just paralyzed the enemies.

I really enjoyed the game because of the story elements, but mechanically it did really end up dumbed down. Was this how the game was released in Japan or did Wrecking Designs do something to it to make it more pathetic?

Working Designs ruined it, as always.

You cannot get poisoned, etc. Those items are useless.

Working Designs removed the ailments that were affected by those potions and whatnot, but didn't remove the potions themselves. Go figure.

I don't totally agree with most people's views on this.  I commented on this when I reviewed CF2, so I'll just paste what I said before:

"Some folks have made a big stink about the removal of status effects and enemy elemental powers.  Personally, I'm just fine with those omissions.  Status effects in console RPGs often do nothing but contribute to time-wasting busy work: pulling out an antidote or casting a cure spell here and there doesn't contribute much to "strategy" or "depth" if you ask me.  Such effects are much more interesting in games like Might & Magic and Ultima where they can have a truly significant and long-lasting impact, and where the games are actually striving for immersive complexity.  Elemental effects also don't matter much to me, as damage is damage, and again, the "strategy" elements in games that do implement these sorts of attack and defense types are usually minimal enough to be practically negligible.  However, I do think Working Designs screwed up by leaving in all the items that relieve or defend against these now-non-existent hazards and even documenting them in the instruction manual.  For years, I didn't know whether it was just my copy that failed to have the effects or what."

Anyone who thinks the US CF2 would've benefitted from these sorts of things can start up a game of PCE CF1 and see how much "fun" comes from their inclusion.

This reminds me of the "repair weapon" function in Shining Force 1, 2 and CD.  I never ever had a broken weapon in any of those games.

Would anyone like to see a PC remake of this game, fully restored with the original dialogue (although translated) and all items/statuses intact? I already have a working game engine that could be used for it.

I'd rather see more new Turbo games produced by Frozen Utopia. ;)

Well, Seldane and lord_cack are both back now, so things are probably going to move forward again. :) But I was mentioning the CF2 thing because right now I've got a little free time that could be put to good use.

I don't like PC games.  I like original games.

A lot of the issue is that Working Designs never actually made games, they localized them. Also Telnet Japan (the developer of the CF games) is out of business as far as I know.

Dragonmaster Dan stops by for his bi-yearly comment. Killer!

Seriously, though, yeah Telenet went under just recently.

Yeah, I remember hearing they sold the Valis series to some company known for producing hentai manga or something similar.
