They Live.  A pretty good late 80s B sci-fi movie starring Rowdy Roddy Piper.  That alone will raise some interest with some folks.

 i love it and watch it periodicaly (as most of the greater carpenters > the fog, princes of darkness, the thing, snake plisken...). when i watched the movie the first time, i was kind of dissapointed that not russel could took over the main role. but that's now about 18 years ago, and in the meantime roddy became the best fitting actor for this specific movie just possible.

Bullit- Awesome.  Movies now suck shit compared to the 40s through the 70s.

Great call! Bullitt was a great mystery. I was totally fooled the first time through!! Also, did you catch the part when the Congressman wanted the black doctor replaced because he was "too young and inexperienced"??

When I first saw it I thought that character was being a total racist, but the second time I saw it, it seemed like the Congressman was more concerned that the doctor was colluding with McQueen's character.

What are your thoughts, if you remember the part I'm talking about?

Robocop: Who is he, what is he, where does he come from? 

What many people see as a special-effects showcase with little substance, to me, is one of the most politically explosive movies I've ever seen.

Robocop takes a major shot at the capitalist system and western society in general, by showing how big business and private enterprise do not ensure a healthy or safe society.

Totally my favorite movie as a kid. When I first rented it, I watched it over and over until it was time to return it. It's still up there as a favorite.
(Steve McQueen original version): Very unique among McQueen's movies.. this is one of the few films where the "king of cool" really loses control of his emotions and laughs out loud!

This movie was really quite deep in a spiritual sense, and it was another politically subversive movie as well. McQueen's character was very wealthy are a result of his currency arbitrage activities.... but was spiritually unfulfilled. He organizes a bank robbery and ends up getting mixed up in a love affair with the female insurance investigator who is on his case!

I never thought there would be a movie I would enjoy as much as I enjoyed Robocop but this one is it. I've seen the remake as well but being a McQueen fan I have to go with the original!!! (Also, the ending was very different)

The last three movies I sat through:

300 - shit with annoying narration, junk CGI, and half of it's in slow-mo
Transformers - shit with decent CGI
American Pie Naked Mile - shit, but funny shit with boobies

All in all, about six hours of my life that I ain't getting back.

Paprika is on my Christmas wish list.    Been dying to see it.

Inland Empire I saw at the NY Film Festival- Lynch was there and answered questions.  When I first saw him I turned my head and he was in this little balcony spot looking exactly like the lady with the weird hair in the Club Silencio balcony in Mullholland Dr.  Anyway Lynch is my favorite director- I'm not an apologist- some of his stuff is trash but I feel that there's a handful of complete masterpieces there.

I saw Teekonkinkreet over the weekend and f*cking loved it.


Are these reviews only about DVDs?  Last couple of movies I saw in the theatres was No Country for Old Men (similar in ways to Fargo- only much better and more hopeless) and The Mist.  The Mist was enjoyable- but I couldn't help feeling that if it was on the Sci-fi network I would have thought it was incredible.  Then again- I probably would have said "wow!  this is good enough to be in theatres!"  I would have been wrong.  CGI is pretty bad.  The first creature looks the worst - the cgi in Dreamcatcher was better.  Not a big Thomas Jane fan either.  There are however- some shout-outs (I counted five) to The Dark Tower series.  Recommended only for King geeks.

However, the anti-japanese subtext bothers me a lot. (or was that the second movie?)

The one with the Japanese corporation was Robocop 3.

The first 2 dealt only with the American OCP corporation.

Yeah my feeling through all of Bullit was definitely that the Congressman was up to no good, but that's only because the actor that played him ALWAYS plays the corrupt a$$hole politician type character, hah.  I really liked how they left the mystery partially unsolved at the end to keep the realism, it was great to see it end up like I assume most real detective work does.

You guys really liked Tekkonkonkrit or whatever its called?  Man that was the worst animation I've seen in ages.  f*cking awful character design, a story that made no sense whatsoever and never went anywhere, and everybody's motives were flimsy at best.  The writing was horrible, the story was lame and boring (not to mention leaving TONS of unexplained occurrences), and if it wasn't for the really good CG backgrounds I'd say it had the worst animation since those old Hannah Barbera cartoons.
