Misc. PC-FX question...
« on: December 18, 2007, 11:57:43 AM »
Was there ever a VCD player app for PC-FX released? Could it even play them, or MPG2 files?

As far as I know it cannot play MPEG files without software being written as the hardware only supports Mjpeg.

I keep hoping that some day I stumble upon some dev software for the PC-FX which can allow me to make Mjpeg movie discs for it.  I will probably have to find some arcane Mjpeg capture card too and get it to work with win2k.  I have seen enough games now on the FX to know it is possible to have pleasant audio and clear video on 80% of the visable screen, which I am guessing it about the maximum bandwith some part of the FX can deal with.

At least Anime Freak Vol 5 and 6 show you can put a very modern DVD like interface on to your Mjpeg videos with a menu, chapters, fast forward and reverse.  The look of it reminded me of Power DVD.

That would indeed be pure awesomeness.  If I'm not mistaken, most security camera equipment uses the mjpeg format, so a capture card should be easily sourced.

It might need a card which records in specific resolutions and compression ratios though, which might not be standard.  I know most (or at least some) Mjpeg cards only work in certain ratios and resolutions.

I wasn't aware of that.  Can they be modified after capturing, or is mjpeg not really supported by any current video editing software?

I don't know if modern editors support it or not.  I do know there are Mjpeg to MPEG conversion programs, but I have not seen a MPEG to Mjpeg program.

I know you can get used Mjpeg cards for probably 20 dollars or less.  The one you linked might be too high res for the PC-FX since I am guessing all video is 200 lines or less of resolution.

The PC-FXGA SDK comes with a movie encoder that takes AVI files as input.  Although, you would still need to write a player program for the PC-FX to read the data from the disc and send it to the appropriate places.

Cool, thank you for the info! ^_^

Mednafen has to be one of the most knowledgable, yet least out spoken people here.

The PCFXGA SDK is interesting but, AFAIK, it only works on PC98 computers which were not released outside of Japan.  I have one of those in my in-laws' closet back in Japan but am such a programming dunce I doubt I could get the FXGA SDK to to do what I wanted it to do.  Has anyone here used it successfully?  Those things have seriously come down in price over the years and are easier than ever to own.

On that same delicate train of thought, are there any PC98 emulators out there?
