New Effin' DVD format?
« on: December 21, 2007, 08:52:13 AM »
Ok, what's up with some of the DVDs comming out now?  Two that stand out in my mind are the Babylon 5 Lost Tales disc and the Simpson's Movie disc...neither will play in my xbox, my ps2 (I even have different dvd driver versions on different memory cards), nor will they play on my computer.  The xbox is sure the discs are not even DVDs (missing UDF?).  Normal stand alone DVD players (Toshiba and Sony) also refuse to play these discs...I am starting to wonder, who can actually get them to play?

However I can rip them and convert them fine and I can play the ripped VOBs without the same error I get when trying to play the origional disc

I've also noticed I can barely rip these discs in at 1x while normally I can rip at 3-4x.

Anyone know what's going on?

It's a conspiracy to get you to upgrade to a Blu-ray or HD-DVD player and discs.

I haven't heard of such problems before.  While it's highly unlikely that you have two defective titles, it could happen.  Since computer drives should be more tolerant of errors, that would explain why you could make usable copies, albeit slowly.  Have you tried a different copy (original) of either title to rule out the possibility of faulty discs?

Yes I have tried different copies and many, many other netflix users report the same problems if you read the reviews of the movies.

I can also read the data off the discs without a single read error, so it is unlikely the discs are bad.

The only disc that won't play in my PS2 is a burned copy of Minority Report.

Have you tried the two I mentioned?  The Babylon 5 one seems to cause lots of people trouble trying to get it to play.

I don't like Babylon 5. >_< I'll rent the Simpson's movie (not a big fan of them either) and see what happens.

Then don't rent that disc, as a fan of the series I had to watch the whole series from beginning to end, just before renting the Lost Tales/Stories to really appriciate it.  At least it didn't stink and contradict nearly the whole show like aweful Rangers pilot did.

Nah, I think I'll rent both for the sake of science, and if the entire Simpsons movie is as stupid as the "Spider-Pig" thing, make that double the sake.

The simpson's movie is pretty much a long TV episode.  Nothing special, nothing great, but it's not bad either.

More proof why DVDs suck.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

 Yeah! Bring back DVHS!

Those two DVD's might have some sort of new age copy protection technology and all your players are belon... umm I mean, might not be able to 'cope' with it like some CD copy protections.

Missa you aren't the only one.

Their speculation seems to be about new cheap PS2s, mine are a Japanese release model and a USA release model.  My USA one has the 40GB official HD.  I have two different Japanese DVD player versions and at least 3 USA ones.  It also won't work in my xbox which is what I usually use as my DVD player since I care more about the lasers in the PS2s than the xbox.

Sorry for the necropost. I have a slimline PS2, and I can confirm that the copy of "Snatch" I bought last night does not play in it. It does play (f*ck yes, love this movie) in my normal Magnavox DVD player.

It's not a necropost if it's 5 days old. to be a real necropost, months, if not years, must have elapsed.

My USA one has the 40GB official HD.
I'm sorry.
