HUGHES Satellite internet at parents.
« on: December 29, 2007, 12:20:35 PM »
This is one funny internet service. It uses a 2 way satellite receiver with a broadband modem much like how a cable modem works. The funny thing is that you do get some decent bandwidth if not during busy hours like 3-9 p.m. and it runs up to 700kbs d/l and 50-80kbs u/l. At first I was like, hmm not all that bad..... then, it got to the point where everything would run as slow as a 14kbs modem, no Bullshit. I read into this more and find out about FAP (Fair Access Policy). Turns out it is like 375MB a day you are aloud to d/l and takes 24 hours to reset. So if you go to oh lets says YOUTUBE, you are screwed in like 1-2 hours. Man I am not bitching anymore from now on about when my Comcast Cable Net goes shitty at certain parts of the evening after experiencing this.

So to anyone with Dial-up living in the middle of nowhere needing high speed, definitely look into this issue more. I heard the bandwidth use to be a lot better before the commercials sold a lot more units and caused it to be overcrowded thus slowing everyone down.

Starband and others are also just as bad on their satellite services they offer for the internet. Pretty much all of them cap you,and alot of them have worse uploads then dial up. People tend to only go with these services if they are located too far out to get DSL or cable. The service is quite expensive, esp considering the shit performance you get. Def no good for online gaming or torrent use.

Yeah, pretty much.

I considered renting our family's farmhouse (about 5 miles from the nearest town, and over 30 miles from Omaha) from my parents and living there for a little while. One of the big turnoffs was Internet access; your choices are dialup, Cellular Data services, satellite, and maybe ISDN. all except Dialup are expensive, and all are vastly inferior to cable.

Here is whats so damn retarded. My parents dirt road to the house goes up about 1/2 a mile from the power lines with Comcast cable available. All those houses around there get full digital cable service. The company is either to damn greedy or doesn't care. I think it is the gay. I guess if my parents tried hard enough they may get it to happen especially in near future I would think.

your parents could probably pay them to run cable to their house, but half a mile of cable is gonna cost them.
