VALIS II
« on: January 01, 2008, 05:49:57 AM »
hey freaks,    I've been having a kick ass good time with Valis II but I just can't beat that samurai guy with the long sword on level 5.  It took me like 2 hours to get to him and I've been trying to beat him for a week.  In general those spinning spikey orb things knock a lot of life out of me so by the time I'm at this (mini?)boss I'm pretty weak.  I think I'm going about something wrong.

any advice?

any other fans?

this is a typical top shelf TG16 game for me - perfect graphics, perfect music,  great gameplay.. I really love it.

PS. I'm not using any cheats of any kind- not interested.  Game is too easy for that I think.

ah well,   just as soon as I sat back down to play VII  I took care of act 5 w/o a problem.  The key here is,  like in many other games, to have perfected the level play down to where you are pretty stong whence you get up to the point of difficulty.  I got to the saumurai with almost full power this time, and was surprised at how easy he was to take down.   Another cinchy boss "fire camel toe"..  act 6 looks AMAZING THO!!

Valis III gets really tough mid-way through. I've been stuck at the same spot for like a year. Granted, I haven't given it many tries but the spot is so ridiculous it's discouraging. You have to freeze a bunch of enemies and then jump on them to get across a river. Not only does it require pixel-perfect jumping, but you have to freeze the enemies at PRECISELY the right moments. If you don't, and happen to get hit by the odd arrow or eagle, your character does this stupid backflip and you fall to your death.

It's possible to get past, just keep trying. Remember to use your slide move (I think by pressing down+RUN) at the right times. Definitely a difficult part of the game though! I got stuck at one of the later levels, I think maybe the ice cave but it might've been past that. I've been meaning to play that game again and beat it.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Meh.  It's not bad, but nothing spectacular.  I've beaten the Genny version of part III (it's the first import game I bought for a staggering $90 bucks or so IIRC.  Was cool, but not that cool.), and other parts didn't keep me interested long enough to keep on trying.

Man,I love the Valis games. I know not everyone does, but the only one I didn't fully enjoy between all the 16-bit ones was Snes version of 4,and Syd of Valis, which was kinda dull. 1 on Genesis or Pc Engine Scd was great,as was the rest on TG16/PCE and 3 on Genesis/Megadrive.

Valis II, a fun game, but too easy, short and basic. If only they had done a bit more with Valis II (more exploration and less linear level design, or, more challenging hack -n- platforming... like Valis III) then it would have been much more memorable.

I still think Valis II is fun, though.

Valis III, on the other hand, is a huge step towards being a solid game. Valis IV, while very nice, has never captivated me as much as Valis III.

The remake of Valis I ... well, I can't even remember what that plays like now...
