That's the one!

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Battle Ace was said to be a cross between Galaxy Force and AfterBurner,
but it turned out to be more like G-LOC and Strike Fighter (After Burner III on SegaCD)

I never really payed attention to the music - though I am listening to the stuff posted here.  it's not bad I guess.

It's a pity that Galaxy Force II was canceled. a translation was meant to hit either the PCE or a SG at some point.

EGM's first major article on SuperGrafx made Battle Ace sound really good

It's a shame Battle Ace wasn't nearly as good as EGM made it out to be.

Love all those extra colors the SG provides!  Love how they didn't bother to mention the 2nd BG layer.

Boy, EGM sure weren't that bright.  The article mentions how the SGX is composite-only, no RF provided.  Then on the next page, they misinterpret the PCE-SGX switch as a channel 1 or 2 switch for RF output!   ](*,)

So the SGX was a 'quantum leap' forward from the PCE, eh?  Geniuses.  [-(

On a semi-related note: what all does the expansion port on the front of a SGX have access to, and can the same pins be found on the back of a PCE?

I don't think anyone really knows what all the pins on that expansion port are for. Therefor it's tough to say whether the same pins are duplicated in the rear expansion port.

But if I had to make a guess, I'd say YES, they are duplicates.

I think the PowerConsole was the only thing to use that front port.

"a quantum leap", heh, only the NEO-GEO was deserving of that.  Only the NEO-GEO was a quantum leap beyond the PCE/TG16, MD/Gen and SGX.

Indeed EGM was not very bright when it came to SuperGrafx among other things.  However lets face it, their editors were only human, they did not have the advantages of the modern internet, time or perspective to get things right within a limited deadline to get magazines to print.

at least according to this, it is an expanded controller port:

Thanks for the link.  Looks like it wouldn't be useful for much of anything that couldn't be done through the normal controller port.
