What's cheaper, the real thing or the VC?
« on: January 30, 2008, 07:58:37 PM »
I don't think many here will be suprised at the result for the TG16.

http://kotaku.com/350940/whats-cheaper-used-copies-or-the-virtual-console

Quote
NES Games
TOTAL COST - USED: $273.53
TOTAL COST - VC: $288.00

SNES Games
TOTAL COST - USED: $354.38
TOTAL COST - VC: $273.53

N64 Games
TOTAL COST - USED: $169.42
TOTAL COST - VC: $102.00

GENESIS Games
TOTAL COST - USED: $406.59
TOTAL COST - VC: $353.00

NEO GEO Games
TOTAL COST - USED: $135.00
TOTAL COST - VC: $72

TURBOGRAFX-16 Games
TOTAL COST - USED: $1177.67
TOTAL COST - VC: $294.00

TOTALS
TOTAL COST - USED: $2516.59
TOTAL COST - VC: $1325.00

In every case except the NES, downloading VC games is cheaper than getting carts. in the case of the TG16, A LOT LESS. I'm suprised the Neo Geo isn't worse, but then again they haven't released any of the good games yet.

beh,  if I'm spending money like that I like to have something tangible in my house.   I have absolutely no interest in the Wii anyway.

Yeah but if you change "TG-16" to "PC Engine", it will flip the other way around. People just pay way to damned much for US releases.

When I eventually get a Wii, I won't be buying much VC stuff. For the most part the VC releases are more expensive, and I prefer original hardware.

Just about half that total is made from the recent release of Dynastic Hero.

But unlike other games that are pretty much identical on PC Engine, DH is a real value on Virtual Console for those english speaking people who are looking to actually play through the game.

Their reasoning is flawed, since there is a tangible difference between a download and physical media with a case and manual.  If the game code is the only thing to be considered when figuring the value, then their prices for the real deal should be for bare copies only.  I don't know about current prices for the other systems, but the prices that they quote for some of the used TG-16 games is quite high - even for ebay (Bomberman 93 - $80, Galaga '90 - $30, Military Madness - $46, etc.).

Hahaha, anyone paying $80 for Bomberman '93 is a chump.

THEN WHY ARE YOU HANGING OUT IN VIRTUAL CONSOLE DISCUSSION?!?!

Yeah, I dunno what Videogamepricecharts' deal is. I'll look at it more closely when I have more time.

He's just playing with you.

But anyway, back on topic, I personally like the VC. Nothing will ever compare to my "real" collection of Turbo games, but the VC is great way for me to download and play some of my Neo Geo favorites as well as the handful of Genesis games I used to love before my Genesis bit the dust.

And nothing's better than being able to play the stuff in 480p.

Though it's unfortunate that you can't turn off the filtering on the TG-16 games.

I still haven't downloaded any TG-16 games on the VC.

I've been meaning to, just to see this filtering that everyone's talking about.

(It's nonexistent on Genesis and NeoGeo titles.)

Well I still have a regular TV so virtual console stuff looks pretty much the same as my Duo.  I really can't even tell a difference on the sound.  I haven't dled any CD games yet though.  I also couldn't say how it looks in 480p but it would most likely look like Magic Engine on a VGA monitor with bilinear filtering turned on.

Its true that they're two different products but although its not a big deal, the VC games do comes with a nice color digital manual that is more useful than most paper ones and you can resume a the last game you played.

I kinda figured that the virtual console was cheaper than the actual games, haha. I'd like to grab dynastic hero on virtual console.

Being able to play those games in 240p is far better than playing them in 480p.  Native resolution always wins, every time, no exceptions.

Also I am amazed that Neo Geo games cost more in reality than they do on the Virtual Console.  What the hell?
