A hello and a question
« on: February 15, 2008, 02:19:22 PM »
Hello, I recently found this site, and it's a great boon to know we Turbo fans have a community, I wish I found it sooner!

Anyways, I recently acquired my first Duo (been playing my T-16 for like 15 years though) so I'm beginning my collection of CD and SCD games.

A collector from evilbay recently contacted me, and he has some very rare titles in pristine condition, however the prices are a tad steep and I can only afford one.

So I was wondering from you more experienced gamers, especially those of you who own any of the following titles, which you would get if you could only have one and why. For the record, I enjoy all game types except sports games, so genre doesn't come into play with me really. I've been leaning toward more RPG's and Shooters tho.

Appreciate the input!

The titles are

Cotton
Exile II
Dungeon Explorer II

Also one quick addition, how much does a good copy of Neutopia II with a case (I assume a repackage since it doesn't come with one) usually run?

Thanks again, and nice to meet you all

-Beld

Of those three games I would recommend Cotton.

Just so you know, these games in their US version are insanely over-inflated. I'm sure this guy probably wants like...$100 for them or some such shit. Buying the US releases of Exile II and DE will have some benefit in the English audio tracks, but Cotton is almost the same thing as a Japanese PC Engine release.

If you are willing to put up with Japanese, you could have all three of those games as imports for less than the price of what some people pay for just one of them as US releases.

DEII doesn't even have much text in it. Exile has some pretty nice dubbed cinematics though. Possibly the best voice acting of any dubbed game.

I'd watch it if someone on Ebay contacted you. Kinda unorthadox. Scams abound...cover your ass...

A Neutopia II in a Hucard case will normally cost you anywhere from $25 to $60. Any more than $60 and you're getting ripped off. Neither Exile II nor Cotton are "rare", they are "uncommon" (some might debate the rarity of Exile II though). Dungeon Explorer II is considered "rare". None of the above mentioned titles are "very rare". Expect to pay a decent price for Dungeon Explorer II, probably in the low $100 range. Exile II and Cotton can be had for $60-$90...any more and it's a ripoff. Neither pop up on ebay very much, not because of their rarity but because no one really wants to part with them; they're amongst the gems of the US collection.

Dungeon Explorer II is by far the strongest title on that list.  It's one of the best action-RPGs for the system, and it has one of the greatest soundtracks ever.  And it's worth owning the English version to appreciate just how cool and creepy the villain is and to avoid missing out on sidequests.

Cotton is a pretty good game but it's ultimately forgettable, and there are many better shooters available for the Duo.  Like Zeta was saying, it's pointless to spend a lot on the expensive US version (unless you're intent on collecting every US release).  You can even view the text during the between-stage intermissions in English in the JP version.

Exile II is barely mediocre and certainly not worth big bucks.

Ah it's not a scam, he's a collector who watches all the turbo auctions going on, and saw me lose one for Vasteel that I was winning all week, and let me know he had one for sale. Sold it to me for a very nice price and has a bunch of custom pictures for stuff i've asked about. His ebay acct has a nigh flawless rating too, so no worries, I'm safe.

I've never played either of the Exile games (#1 is in the mail, and I've seen the youtube vid for it, looks very cool) and I've heard #2 was cool. He is asking a bit for them all, I'm not a crazy english only collector or anything, I just don't wanna miss anything, as has been pointed out by some of you.

So Cotton loses NOTHING in the Japanese version as opposed to the English one? Does it have a different title? I don't believe I have ever seen Cotton for sale anywhere, in either format.

The DE II is complete and in english, and from my research it seems like that one always fetches a high price tag.

Sounds like I should pick DE II for several reasons....anymore feedback is appreciated tho!

Thanks again

Oh, one more quick question.

I had heard Cotton and DEII were "very rare" games, although Rover from what I've been reading on the forums really knows his stuff.

Is there a post that has the titles separated into "rarity" categories? That could help me in the future before making anymore purchases.

Thanks

JapanGameStock is selling the JP version for about $36.  And that's probably a little high; I'm pretty sure I purchased mine for less than thirty (although this was years ago).

From personal talks/dealings on this site...Rover, Nat, runin, are excellent people to ask specifics, and are very helpful.  Not rying too slight anyone else, but these guys I have dealt with, and have helped me with many of these questions.  :)

No, infact the Jpn version has recorded voices and you can select the text to be in English, thats the only differences i can think of.

Yeah DEII is the clear winner here.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Welcome aboard!

The Old Rover is spot on with his price quotes - of the three games, I'd pick DEII.  Cotton and Exile: W.P. are merely mediocre games within their respective genres, but DEII is outstanding.  It's a fairly long quest, is multiplayer, sports a fantastic soundtrack, and is eminently replayable using different characters.

I'm probably the only person here who would pick cotton out of those three, thats because my favorite type of games are shooters and side scrolling action games, it has the makings of a great shooter, good graphics with great effects and lots of colors, good sound with with great sound effects and music but its the gameplay that keeps it from being a top class shooter, your character is large and your put in some pretty tight situations, it just feels a little off for some reason.

Hello dude :) I would recomend DE2. Especially if you liked the first one. I'd say to expect to pay anywere from $50-$120 for it. Cotton is a good shooter, but not that fun imo. Cotton usually goes for $60 and up. As for Exile 2, you might not like it. Its SUPER hard for some reason. It usually sells for $40 and up. If it has that card that goes around the cd case, expect to pay a lot more.
