the differences between the Magical Chase games are legendary..  a quick google search (or youtube,even better) will make it all clear

Gonna revive an old topic to point out that the sound effects for generic enemies blowing up in Super Star Soldier are different in the US vs the JP version. Not sure if there are any other differences yet but this is the first thing I noticed.

Speaking of having a Wiki, I think some of the details here could be added to The Cutting Room Floor and there are already some TG16/PCE articles(some really obvious changes, like "The text are all in Japanese" may not be suitable to be added there, even though these are actually huge differences).

(About Wonderboy)There may be some other minor platforms these games appeared on, but I listed the main/most common ones here. Only the first game saw a port on the NES.
There is actually a port of the second game on the Famicom(unless the you straightly consider the NES to be a different platform from the Famicom) using characters from Journey to the West, and it's stated to be developed by Westone even in Wikipedia, which is questionable though, as the title screen suggests that it's possibly (co)developed by NMK. Though the graphics are so different that you may not recognise the game at first glance, it's indeed the same game, as I remembered beating it using a walkthrough for the PCE version(there were minor differences though, like some stages were horizontally flipped).

That is so crazy because it seems unnecessary (but, then again, I have only played the TG-16 version). I would love to hear your thoughts on it (for example, do you prefer one SFX to the other? Why?)

I never knew about this FC port/version!

IGNORANCE: In the 80's, bored and lacking cable TV, my brothers and I used to watch a TV drama of Journey to the West that aired in NYC on public TV (the public station leased a few hours every day for "international programs" from various networks). Before the interwebz, I had no idea that this was a popular legend/story and thought it was merely a kid's show with a very short history. How wrong I was.

Well at first I really hatted the sound. It's all through the entire game.

generic enemies have the different blow up sound as well as the little power up ships. Played the JP version for a while last night and the sound effects grew on me. Can't really decide if I like one more than the other.

I'll have to play the US version again to see if I notice any other differences now that I played through the entire JP version.

Listen to the sound all the 1st stage enemies make when they blow up.

^ OK, although I could totally get used to the JP SFX (and there is something to be said for making things subtle and more nuanced when it is repeated incessantly in any game, plus, it is less likely to distract from the music)....

...it is SO MUCH MORE SATISFYING to have the NA SFX when actually playing the game.

IIRC, it sounds like NEC swapped in BLAZING LAZERS SFX to replace the "weak" ones in NA Super Star Soldier.

Now I wonder about Soldier Blade (NA vs JP)....and Final Soldier (JP only).

The Japanese SSS explosions are chip sounds, while the North American SSS uses samples.

If only more games had samples swapped in when localized.
