TurboPlay Magazine Archives (04.02.12)
« on: February 24, 2008, 08:18:38 PM »

Here is EGM's 1993 Buyer's Guide (.pdf) (I'm just learning how to use the OCR software, so the text embedded in the .pdf is pretty garbled...)

See which TG-16 titles earned some respect from EGM editors (hint: Cosmic Fantasy 2, Air Zonk, Gate of Thunder, etc.). Also, inspect the enigmatic (and unreleased) Bonk RPG as well as the interesting category created for Dragon Knight 3 (PCE). The most interesting category? Well, that would have to be the "BEST VIDEO GAME RUMOR" (Street Fighter II as a CD-ROM for TG-CD and Sega CD! Imagine the loading times!) You might also enjoy the prescient article entitled "CDs—The Future of Video Gaming" amongst other TG-16 goodies.

If you want to get high-resolution .jpg files of individual pages, use the .pdf as a reference to change the PAGE NUMBER in the link below:

Now available (12.11.11) for your pleasure:

Excellent Holiday Catalog (1993, CAPTRON / G&G Stores)

• Dungeon Explorer II

Now available (01.29.09) for your pleasure:

BONK'S REVENGE WALLPAPER (iPhone / iPod Touch)
• 8 Wallpaper designs to choose from
• Show some love for the Chikkuns!

HAPPY NEW YEAR 1993!
• Electronic Games Magazine (January 1993)
• Zonk, Link (!!!), Sonic, Chun Li and company drinking champagne
• TG-16 Stocking Stuffer: Neon Spandex Fingerless Gloves
• Multimedia Game of the Year - Dragon Slayer: Legend of Heroes (SCD)

Any suggestions on how I can offer wallpaper for other platforms is appreciated...

Do you guys think that Dragon Slayer is superior to Ys: Book I & II, as the editors of EG felt back in 1993? Dragon Slayer was up against Night Trap (Sega CD) and Loom (PC). I dug Loom (it was OK), and I played Night Trap (after the initial novelty wore off, it was pretty tedious), so DS should have won hands down. Of course, I doubt that the readers voted accordingly. What do you think?

• REVIEWS: It Came From the Desert, Ballistix
• Overhauled Man 3
• Rayxanber III
• "Dragons & Wizards... Oh My!" -- Ys III for SNES
• Working Designs begins localization of Cosmic Fantasy 2

Bonk for President is goofy stuff, I wonder what you'd get if you wrote to the Campaign Headquarters... a bumpersticker, perhaps?

To think that the localization of CF2 began 16 years ago this month... :)

Now available (03.29.08) for your viewing pleasure:

The Ides of March '92 - '94
• 1993: Sega CD + Blackhole Assault + Kris Kross versus the venerable TurboDuo + Dragon Slayer + Lords of Thunder.
• 1993: Working Designs to bring SNK's World Heroes and King of the Monsters to U.S.!
• 1993: Air Zonk Runner-up for shoot-em-up of the year (Readers' Choice Awards)
• 1993: Lords of Thunder scores 5/5
• 1993: Bomberman '93 scores 4/5
• 1993: Time Cruise scores 4/5
• 1994: Terraforming (SCD): "Now available, the trick shooter designed by Syd Mead."
• 1994: Dynastic Hero expected in March '94, Godzilla expected second quarter '94.

The news about Working Design trying to bring NeoGeo titles to North America is neat, especially because King of the Monsters never made it to an NEC console. Plus, I didn't remember the critics having such a positive reaction towards Lords of Thunder, Time Cruise, Bomberman '93 and Air Zonk...

OLD STUFF:
Hey, I'm only three years late. There are still a lot of things that I need to fix / add / finalize, but I had to make a post before going to sleep.

I'll keep it brief:
1. If you have any suggestions, or spot any errors, please tell me.
2. I wrote a lot of stuff 2-5 years ago... so some things need to be corrected.
3. IE7 is a pain in the ass. I can't get the left & right columns to look pretty.
4. For some folks, the "database" will take a long time to load in your browser. Be patient.
5. Once database is loaded, you can avoid re-loading it again by keeping it in its own window and simply opening new tabs / windows in your browser to view subsequent pages / scans.

Short term:
Yes, I have a ton of new page scans in the pipeline. They should trickle out on a regular basis.
I have lots of cute images to add to the pages to counteract all the text.

Thanks :)

So, over the next 6 to 10 decades?

In all seriousness though, I'm glad something motivated you to make a move on that. It almost excuses your 6 month hiatus from the forums.

Very nice indeed.

What do you think the ideal size should be for page scans? I want to prepare for the next generation (or three) of fancy, widescreen monitors.

On my 19" 4:3 1280x1024 monitor, they're all quite legible.  The last one is large enough for the text to be readable, but the screen shots are a bit on the small side; the first two are better, though the text is probably too big and some panning is required.  I'd go with the wide one, since wide screen monitors are becoming more and more common, and it's preferable to see pages side by side when the graphics spanned both pages like that.

From TurboPlay, Issue 10, Cosmic Fantasy 2 section of the Foreign Games article.

Quote
...oh, and you get the girl, too!

From the context of the article, I can safely assume that they are talking about Laura. Imagine what an uproar this article may have almost caused!

I certainly would have felt quite upset, not to mention cheated.

WTF?

i thought Adams Family SUCKED
Yeah, I don't understand how Addams Family and Night Creatures scored as well as they did. I'm not trying to bash the games, but....

Hahahahhahahaha!

I've actually made a commitment to regularly update the magazine stuff. I have stuff that folks sent me over three years ago. In fact, I was over at Turbo2K not long ago, randomly looking at the old forums, and one of these folks was bummed that his scans were never put up on the web. I CAN'T LET HIM DOWN! Better late than never :).

Plus, I have some stuff that I've done over the years, just waiting to be seasoned, garnished and uploaded.

I totally agree, but I'd like to hear what other folks think as well!

Damn, we have lazy bastards here. Necromancer, you're the only one to give me the tech specs I was looking for :)

I agree: when a layout spanned two (or more) pages, the page scans should re-capture that same layout. I don't care if the image is super-wide,  the benefits outweigh the deficits.

Aside: I thought you folks would have started talking about the TV SPORTS 4-in-1 pack-in for the TurboDuo by now...

:)

Call me a masochist, but I would have wanted to see this released, later, as a "Sports Package" including extra pads and a turbotap. No one would have bought it, of course, but it would have been a novelty :).

I would still like to play the Baseball game... given time to polish it, it might have been an OK game.

the baseball game would probably just have been a renaming of world class baseball.
(were there any other baseball games for the pce/turbo?)
