A Bonk/Air Zonk/Tengai Makyou 1992 Calander Poster.
« on: March 31, 2008, 06:57:26 PM »
There was a calendar poster that mostly features Bonk, Air Zonk, the occasional Tengai Makyou individuals (even before some of them were introduced, like Kabuki, I believe), and other various characters from the games. It was stated featured in the Japanese magazine known as "Gekkan PC Engine" made for the year 1992.

Some of the notable pictures to be featured include a pink plesosaurus/seadragon-like creature, Air Zonk doing a few stretches/dancing, Bonk biting on King Drool's head, King Drool in a cool pose on December, an old Air Zonk and Bonk, Bonk angry in several locations, an excited Air Zonk, Air Zonk dressed up as Santa Clause, Air Zonk dressed up as Santa Clause riding in a sleigh being pulled by a cool reindeer (my personal favorite), Air Zonk riding in a car, Punchy Pedro, Super PC Genjin (perhaps a remiscent of "SuperPCGenjinGrafx") in the first month, Air Zonk in scuba gear, Bonk eating a piece of meat, and even Air Zonk as a snail! King Drool's head is also placed for the two Friday the 13ths that occured that year, meaning that he could have brought some bad luck . For my birthday, which is on January 15th, Bonk in a kimono is next to that day (which, in fact, there are several Japanese cultural artifacts for that month; apparantly, they celebrate a holiday then).

The calendar poster itself can be seen in the links, avaiable in two different sizes:

As a side note, I hope that Sunteam_Paul is able to fully keep this intact for the update on his website. It is one I'm very fond of :).

That's pretty freaking awesome! Does Paul own it? If so, does he want to send it to me? :)

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Yeah Japanese Bonk always has bigger eyes and isn't drawn like he's always pissed like he was drawn for America.  He instead always looks happy and dippy.  There are changes in the Bonk games to that degree as well- in Japanese versions Bonk will turn hilariously effeminate from eating the big meat while in the US he will look like he's seriously stoned.  Makes you wonder if Bonk would have been much bigger here if they didn't mess with him.  When you look at the success of some Japanese characters here that kept their Japanese aesthetic- you have to wonder if the "americanization" of Bonk wasn't just another big misstep by Hudson/Nec.

That's one kick ass calender; ya gotta love Bonk in a life saver, old men Bonk and Zonk, and the Zonk kite.

Makes you wonder if Bonk would have been much bigger here if they didn't mess with him.

I doubt it, considering the level of homophobia in this country at the time.

Oh man!! That calender is awesome!! Pcenginefx should definitely work on a calendar of its own.

I'd love to help out on something like that. Aaron would definitely have some great ideas on that.  :)

But each month the calendar could have comparison images of games, maybe pics of some of the more massive personal collections of members here, or pics of our beloved NEC consoles with specs.  You could even note the release dates of games and gaming conventions like MGC throughout the year. The possibilities are endles. I would think if it got started now, it could be finished for the next calendar year.  Maybe I'm just being silly, but I think that would be awesome.

OK, I'm pre-ordering my calendar now.

I'm pretty sure he owns the poster (and the magazine article it came from), but I doubt he'll want to give it to anyone else. He probably likes it much so to keep it for himself :P.

There isn't much of a clear-cut answer I can provide for this. Kirby and Bomberman have been changed to more American style, notably in advertisements and box arts, and haven't really had a high degree of popularity but they still did relatively well in sold copies. Yet, some characters that have been altered for the US particularly for cartoons like Mario and Sonic haven't had a large dent in theirs. There are certainly other factors that made Bonk unloved for the most part, especially pertaining to the TurboGrafx-16, but it can't be said if the in-game changes had an impact at all. I had always found his artwork for here to be a little bit scary, however :?.

I have always liked to have another video game related day-to-day or wall calendar :P (I had gotten a Pokemon one around for the year 2000). I think the only acceptable ideas would be to have pictures of the games and consoles for each day/month, and perhaps a small description of them. Even if it is only available on the Internet, I would definitely love to view or have it 8).

There have been a few online calendars I've heard of before. It would be a good thing for a video game-based one, if ones does not exist already, would be made. I would think that a PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 or Nintendo-themed one would be the best.

Just like I thought you would say, Sunteam_Paul . I hope you didn't mind me making a topic about that calendar featured on your website :-".

I'm pretty sure that this poster, was also used for some game on the SFC called "Same Game" or something like that.  I don't know what type of game it was, & the name might've even been a rough translation that I heard about several years ago.

Same Game is a tile-matching game.

There was a Hudson PC-FX port of this game that shipped with the dev kit:

I'll try to dig up the ultra high resolution version and put in on the site when I push the new update out.
